Using different speakers with Bose Lifestyle HT system

I have a Bose Lifestyle 8 system (don't ask me why), and am looking for some help/advice. The center speaker (cube) seems inadequate in terms of volume and fidelity, especially when playing CDs. Is it possible to replace this center cube with a better speaker and see an improvement, or is this system not able to take advantage of a more complex speaker? Thanks for your help.
