i just bought an xbox and with the standard AV cables i can put it in surround sound but can not view the actual game, what do i do?

It has been awhile since I purchased my X-Box. But I don't think that the standard cables will give you digital sound.
If you are hooking this directly up to a A/V reciever. You either need to have a video connection running from the A/V reciever to the TV via the monitor out to the input on your TV.. Or just run the audio portion of the X-Box to the stereo, and the video directly to the reciever..
