Best way to hookup components - thru A/V receiver or to TV?

I am having trouble with video correlating with sound. I have looked at all the schematic drawings on this forum and none apply to my situation. While watching DirecTV it appears like the sound is slightly off from the pictures movements (people speaking) Thanks
