Hello,

I don't have a lot of money to throw around, so I'm simply looking for the best quality I can get in my low price range ($200-$350). I have a DVD player, so systems without DVD are fine.

Here are some of the options I'm currently considering:

ONKYO HTS660 - $290
PANASONIC SCHT95 - $290
PANASONIC SCHT400 - $300

Of these three, which would you recommend? Is there anything else of comparable quality in this price range that I'm overlooking?

Many thanks!

I have the Panasonic SC-HT05 and I love it, so I can reccomend Panasonic, but I'm sure a lot of the mebers here will definitley vote for the Onkyo. It seems to be preffered.

Thanks for the feedback.

HTIB Help: How does the SC-HT05 differ from the SC-HT95?

Bill Brooks: Could you please elaborate on the Yamaha recommendation? Why do you feel it is better than the units I listed?

Thanks!

I didn't say I felt it was better. Your earlier post said:

"Is there anything else of comparable quality in this price range that I'm overlooking?"

I would just say he Yamaha YHT-150 would be of comparable quality. I would listen to the systems, look at the options/connections, and make your choice. There are good reviews on the Yamaha but this is their starting model which doesn't have any s-video connections, if that would ever be a problem it depends on the user. I think the Onkyo 660 does. I didn't know you could get the 660 for under $300 though, if you can, then it MAY be the better choice.

Thanks for clarifying. I also found the YHT-340 for <$300, but I can't find detailed specs. Is it superior to the YHT-150?

I don't know offhand. The 340 would be an older generation, maybe last years' model. Here are comparison charts from the yamaha site:

These links should help with your question about how the two Panasonic's differ.

The SC-HT05 is a nice system for the money. No DVD player, but it's got a ton of hookups (2 optical, 1 coax) but not S-videos.
