Newbie questions: what height should I place my fronts? How far apart should they be? Also, is there a problem if I tilt the front speakers on their side? The front speakers are likely going to be Paradigm Monitor 5 or Studio 40's.

Height should be about ear level when at the listening position.
Back in my stereo days, fronts are ideal at 6 feet apart.

I would recommend sitting the speakers the way the company designed them to be oriented. Otherwise the angle of the sound will be screwed up. I've found that by the time you buy bookshelf type speakers and decent stands, you could have upgraded to floorstanding speakers.

Tweeters of the speakers should be at ear level to your listening position.
For the best imaging position yourself and the speakers in a triangle. Your distance to each speaker should be how far the speakers are apart.
Speakers can also be "pointed" at the listener.
