The NFL is doing well. The most recent edition of the Super Bowl (Super Bowl XLV) holds the record for total number of U.S. viewers, attracting an average audience of 111 million viewers, making it the most viewed television broadcast of any kind in U.S. history. However, the growth of its European equivalent, the UEFA Champions League Final, is outpacing its American rival. I personally expect the ratings for the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final to outperform this all time best Super Bowl 每 but still feel the NFL Super Bowl is the more iconic and impactful sport event.

Two of the world¡¯s biggest teams will be facing each other in the final: FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC. The Final at Wembley Stadium will be match number 125 of a competition that started on September 14th (or even earlier if you¡¯d also include the qualifying matches in this count). The final of Europe¡¯s premier club competition first passed the Super Bowl in global audience numbers in 2009, making it the most-watched annual single sport event in the world for the first time. 2011 will be the first time ever that the UEFA Champions League final will be played on a Saturday evening, aiming for ¡®Super Saturday-like¡¯ TV domination and 每 most probably 每 the advertising revenue to match. However in terms of horizontal impact, cultural importance, advertising and entertainment value, the UEFA Champions League 每 in my humble opinion 每 still has some catching-up to do.

Advertising

The social and cultural impact of the Super Bowl can hardly be overrated. Because of its high US viewership, commercial airtime during the Super Bowl broadcast is the most expensive of the year. Watching and discussing the broadcast¡¯s commercials has become a significant aspect of the event.

Some random well-known examples include;
¡öThe legendary 1984 Apple Macintosh 1984 Commercial directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Anya Major (also know as Elton John¡¯s nikita) released for a single airing on January 22, 1984 during the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII.
¡öThe Larry Bird vs. Michael Jordan McDonalds Commercial made in 1993 (What IS M.J. wearing?!) and the 2010 update featuring LeBron James and Dwight Howard
¡öThe 2003 Reebok commercial featuring Tery Tate the Office Linebacker. ¡°The pain train is coming, whoo whoo¡±!
¡öThe ¡°winner of the 2011 Super Bowl was Volkswagen with ¡°The Force¡±. Guess all of you would have seen it by now. Click here for some deleted scenes.

More legendary Super Bowl advertising here. The UEFA Champions League does not know a similar culture. The advertising is most certainly strong, but be no means as highly anticipated 每 and therefore not as valuable 每 as the commercials on Superbowl Sunday.

Entertainment

Moving the Champions League final to a Saturday will have a positive impact. It will extend the impact of the game and increase its reach and audience. However, Superbowl Sunday is practically an American national holiday! It is the second-largest day for US food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day. In addition the event¡¯s pre-game and halftime ceremonies have featured some of world¡¯s best entertainers and boast some absolutely legendary performances, such as:
¡öThe memorable patience and control of Michael Jackson, who froze for almost two whole minutes during his Super Bowl Performance in 1993
¡öThe legendary U2 Super Bowl halftime-show of 2002, honouring the victims of 9/11
¡öThe notorious show of 2004 featuring Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and the world¡¯s most famous ¡°wardrobe malfunction¡± ever
¡öPrince¡¯s Superbowl Performance in 2007 featuring the Florida A&M University marching band, the marching 100.
¡öand the ¡°put the chicken fingers down¡±performance of ¡°The Boss¡± in 2009

American Super Sunday vs. European Super Saturday

Reviewing the above I feel it¡¯s fair to conclude that similar traditions surrounding the UEFA Champions League Final still have room to grow. Of course I¡¯m excited about seeing the world¡¯s best player(s) perform in the most important football match of the year and I wonder which team will win its fourth UEFA Champions League trophy (FC Barcelona). However I¡¯ll also be very interested in some of the other aspects around the game. Let¡¯s take a look at the entertainment and the advertising this Saturday. Budweiser has always been able to activate the Super Bowl in a fantastic way. Heineken is an Official Sponsor of the UEFA Champions League and has done some fantastic activations work (check THIS out, it¡¯s great work). Will Heineken also be the biggest winner this Saturday?

Enjoy the match!

American football and the Superbowl is played ONLY in 1 country, the United States...and had 163 TV viewers in the US last year..not to mention TV viewers from other nations..

Soccer aka European Football (UAEF) is played by many nations, NOT just 1, and their World Cup is a month long event and world wide has 285 TV viewers for their finals..

SO the Superbowl does VERY well compared to the UAEF in TV audience, and exceeds it in every other way...

Cricket is a joke and doesn't compare to the UAEF which has 4000 million fans, while cricket has only 1000 million fans who are mostly 3rd world poor nations with no TV's and no ability to view the games ...

LK: You statement on UAEF is a joke. Considering that the world population is 6.9 billion, and over 40% are under 5, there is no way there could be "4000 million fans" i.e. 4 billion fans. Get your math straight before you post.

Cricket is watched by over a billion people world-wide

We were talking about numbers in audience.
However, you have brought in
Brand Value: $420 million as the top in 2010,

This 2007 article states:
"Last year, Forbes magazine attempted a valuation of the different cricket boards. According to its calculations, the BCCI was worth $1.5 billion,........"

This article of 2010 states:
that Cricket
South Africa had profits of $37 million in 2010 (247.8 million Rands).

2011 Cricket World Cup Final
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Final

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Final was played between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 2 April 2011. This was the 10th ICC Cricket World Cup. India won the match by six wickets, its second World Cup victory, having previously won in 1983. India became the third nation to have won the World Cup more than once, along with Australia and the West Indies. This was the first World Cup where both the finalists were Asian teams. This was the second time in World Cup history that a host nation won the World Cup Final and the first time to win on their home ground. Sri Lanka was a co-host when it won the 1996 Cup, but the final match was played in Lahore, Pakistan.

In the stadium, the match was watched by 33,000 spectators and on TV, in India alone, the final was watched by 67.6 million viewers although another estimate put the figure at 135 million.
The matches were also broadcast live on ESPN Star Sports' website and state-run Doordarshan and DD1, which reaches more than 90% of the countrys 1.21 billion population.

Media coverageMain article: List of UEFA Champions League broadcasters...

The competition attracts an extensive television audience, not just in Europe, but throughout the world. The matches are broadcast in over 70 countries with commentaries in more than 40 languages each year. With an estimated audience of 109 million people, the 2009 Champions League final surpassed that year's Super Bowl (106 million viewers) for the first time as the most-watched annual single sport event in the world.

LK: I thought you said 4000 million people watched it. That is 4 billion out of the total world population of 6.9 billion.

Over 1 billion people watch cricket, and that is more than the people watching football.
