Some Taiwan-based chip packagers and Japanese TV vendors have already entered the final stages for product testing, the sources said, and initial shipments will be products supporting 40- and 55-inch TVs.
Taiwan's LED chip packagers will produce LED light bars and then ship them to back-light unit (BLU) makers appointed by the Japanese vendors, said the sources, noting that the Japanese companies will also appoint their own LED chip suppliers.
South Korea-based TV vendors Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have aggressively extended their influence in the supply chain with investments in upstream suppliers and equipment procurement to ensure LED supplies. Their vertical integration and increased presence upstream have made life difficult for Japan's Sony and Sharp, which are also attempting to be more active in the LED-backlit LCD TV market, the sources commented.
Several Japanese companies have recently changed their previous practice of sourcing only from fellow suppliers in Japan and begun tighter cooperation with packagers in Taiwan.
LED back-lit LCD TVs are projected to account for 25% and 30%, respectively of Sony's and Sharp's TV sales in 2010.
