Extended warranties for wide screens in the $3000 range are running about $300 for two years and $500 for 4 years. What are your thoughts on the wisdom of buying them?

Depends on what kind of set it is and where you go...

NEVER buy an extended warranty on anything, If you are compelled to do so to protect yourself through years three, what makes you think the following years where you are MORE likely to have issues will give you peace of mind.

Buy your TV at Costco where the return policy has NO timelimit and sleep well knowing you can get a full refund in 6 years if the TV craps out.

Tom,
that sounds to good to be true!! do you have experience in doing so?
Because then even if the TV (whatever you buy) is a few hundred bucks more, it would be totally worth it!

It does sound to good to be true, but it is true. Costco will take back almost anything except pc's at any time as long as you have the receipt. So, five years down the road, you could take something back and buy something else. The problem is that Costco doesn't always have the latest models and usually have the discountinued models for sale in their warehouses. I personally have not purchased any kind of tv from Costco due to the reason of carrying the older models.
