Just a quick update...

Samsung is going to cover my repairs (lamp retiring early, and possibly ballast problem). I called them to ask them about whether I should switch to the Phillips setup from the Toshiba, and let them know I was out of warranty, which is why I wanted to make sure and do the right thing. The guy (Joe) says, let me see what I can do for you (without my even asking), and the next thing I know, Samsung is covering it (5 months past warranty).

Wow. Nowdays, at most companies, especially huge corporations, good service is practically non-existent. It is obvious to me now that Samsung knows the value of customer relations.

As far as quality, well, we'll see how the next year goes.. But this kind of support is worth every penny I paid for the Set.

Regarding the synch issues with Video games, after 1 week of phone time with Samsung -

Derek Banks the product specialist who tests games on the Samsung TV's told me that ONLY the HLP5067 is really tested & verified to be lag free until the new HLR models come out.

I've had my HLP5063W since last June/July not exactly sure... I found this forum last week, and have read hundreds of posts. Most of them would have made me not buy this TV. But I have had not a single problem as discussed in this forum.
No color wheel noise, fan noise, screen smudges, audio sync. Nothing... Maybe I have the one and only TV that was assembled the way Samsung intended. I consider myself lucky. I just wanted to voice how happy I am with my model. But I'm glad I bought the 4yr warranty, and advise ALL to get the warranty no matter what MRF you go with.

I try to tell people that the negative posts are only a fractional representation of the total market. It is so refreshing to see a post such as yours. The 63 series posts on this forum have given Samsung a bad name, though many owners will admit they have the best picture of all the models they surveyed. Many have overcome the lamp and high pitched color wheel issues and like myself, are extremely pleased with the display and the customer service they received.
The March 8th post is also encouraging. I've never heard of Sony doing a repair 5 months out of warranty. Sony left me high and dry on a bad picture tube at 18 months. On another post, I just read that Samsung has replaced an HLN with an HLP at no charge just because of a gaming A/V lag. That's exceptional!

I applaud Samsung for their extra effort to their valued customers.

When I turn on my Samsung DLP TV, the picture comes on for 10 seconds then shuts off. The temp light would then turn red. The fans are working, so I replaced the thermostat. Now the same thing happens but the 3 flashing lights are on. Any suggestions?

I am in a tough spot. I have been postponing my purchase to go to a larger TV. First looked at Sony 34" 16 X 9 and thought I'd wait. Found out that the Sony would not work with the Bose 321 system because the subwoofer is not "shielded" and will distort the SONY picture tube. Strike 1.

Now plasma became a good alternative except for the lifespan of the pixels. Strike 2.

Started looking at the Samsung DLP..THE 4674W. Size good, picture good, price respectable. Now I am concerned over the previous comments posted regarding the lights of death issues, etc. I just want to make a solid decision and not face the issue of not making a better viewing choice. Please help clear the air. Look foward to your comments. Thanks...

- switched on the set an had a heavy pink coloured screen ( hapend 4 times in 1 month
- Asynchronized voice through Svideo1 from SD decoder and with my amplifier, this is very annoying
- through my dvd player connected to DVI, voice is ok

I place a service call but was wondering what icould do on the AS voice for the digital channels ? any thoughts, I know my amplifier does not have a delay feature.

Bertrand:
Make sure that the issue is with the Tv not with the station broadcasting. More often then not it is with the broadcaster. If it is the tv try diabling the digital noise reduction and DNIE. I have found that this results in better SD picture quality as well. For the pink picture, make sure that your video cables are firmly seated. Steve R: I have this set and have no issues other than the screen smudges which I am in no hurry to fix yet since they are a minor issue. Good to know that there is a fix though.

Thank you for the feedback, otherwise i am also very satisfied with the quality picture when I play DVDs.
I have taken a 5 years extended warranty and should be fine.

I've had my HLP 5063 since Nov. 04. Overall, I love it (though the A/V sync problem on ESPN HD is really annoying). However, it just started shutting off every so often. A week ago, it was once in the morning when it was still cold. Yesterday, it shut off six times over 10 hours. While I wait for serivce to show up, has anybody dealt with anything similar and how was it resolved?

No, nothing flashes. It's just the red "standby" light, as if I turned it off normally

Not sure how common a problem this is but just wondering if anyone knows how to fix the fraction-of-a-second delay that I get on my PS2. My xbox doesn't seem to have the problem but its really killing my jump shot on PS2.

If you would have read my message above on this subject you would know there is NO FIX. There is currently only ONE Samsung DLP that has no video game issues, it is the HLP5067 (50"). This information came directly from the mouth of the guy (Derek the product specialist) at Samsung who is THE guy who tests video games on the Samsung DLP's. I have a HLN507 that they are replacing. Since you have a smaller one, if you want to replace yours with a HLP5067 you will have to pay the difference in price. Call 800-747-5618

I have the HLP5063 and the picture quality is terrible. I have my Directivo hooked up with S video and my DVD player and xbox hooked up with good component cables and it looks awful. I had the tech out today and he said that is how it should look. It is hazy, lacks clarity and the colors just dont jump out at you the way they should. I am probably going to return it to Best Buy. I am very disappointed. Any idea why I get such a poor picture?

Don't use S-video. I will look like crap on any HD-ready TV. You need to at least use component (red, green, blue). If your DirecTivo box does not have component out, then you should seriously think about buying a newer model that does. Why spend over 2 Grand on a TV and then feed it with an inferior signal?

As for your DVD player, are you using a progressive scan player? If not, you are only getting 480i instead of 480p, and are missing out on a cycle time that is cut in half, which will give you a smoother, cleaner picture.

Michael-

S-video is going to look like crap. The TV will display whatever you give it, so garbage in, garbage out. It is like buying a Ferarri, leaving it in first gear and complaing the car won't go very fast.

Give the set a nice HD signal, or even a good DVD player and you will be amazed by the color and clarity the set can produce.

Does anyone know when Samsung started sealing the screens on the DLP's to prevent the smudges that appear? (after what manufacture date). I bought a Sammy DLP in Nov 2004, and had the screen replaced due to the smudges. The service tech told me that my screen was only sealed on the corners but that they are now sealing the screens all the way around to prevent moisture, etc. from getting in and causing the smudges. For that matter, has anyone heard a similar story or was that tech just giving me a line?

The new Samsung screens are sealed to prevent moisture build between the lenticular and freznel screen. I am a Samsung Field Engineer and the tech was correct.

Hi Shelley,
So what's the real story behind the xx74 models with the 6 segment color wheels and 9k rpms? On paper this appears to be a step backwards.

What is "new" I have a 5085 model that was bought a few weeks ago, am I asking for problems it has a july 2004 date on the box label. I have noticed a few strange screen things, I don't know how to describe it though. thanks.

The 85 series is considered the best DLP on the market today with the 74 running a close second.

Strange things on the screen are going to be the norm in all brands as the digital transmission medium is less than perfect from broadcast to reception. The use of cable in general and the infancy of CableCard has it's own inconsistancies while satelite has it's own share of quirks.
Gone are the days of fine tuning the lines and snow to a clear state. They have been replaced by a false state of digital perfection with occasional digital fragmentation, freeze frame, audio drop out, and digital error correction. It's enough to make you think it's a set problem when most of the time it's not.
The use of HDMI/DVI is touted by some to be the "perfect" delivery system, but there are circumstances where component RGB is the superior connection. The use of an HDMI/DVI connection from a sat or cable set top box can introduce strange artifacts as you switch from HD to SD to ED programming. The same HDMI/DVI connection can deliver a flawless signal from a DVD player.

To sum this up...always consider the source signal!
Digital signal is definitely not a constant in any medium.
A good DVD player may be the closest thing to a constant source signal.
No single connection method is superior! If you find HDMI/DVI to be flaky try switching to component RGB from that signal source.

I have a 4663 connected to a Samsung DTV HD box. I'm using a Belkin HDMI cable and get intermittent outages of video (about 1 to 2 seconds)but audio is fine. It happens a few times an hour. Other inputs - svid and component are fine. Svid out of the HD box is fine too.

Anyone have any advice?

Samsung is only good if you live in thier easy service area. We live in a rural area and got screwed. Our 50 inch DLP quit working (color wheel) 2 months ago (after only only having it two months). My husband is taking it to Best Buy today for an exchange. Problem is they most likely will not exhcnage it with another equal TV as the same type costs more now than what we paid. We are now dependant on Best Buy doing the right thing as Samsung will not honor the waranty other than arranging an exchange and they said it is up to Best Buy how they want to exchange it (store credit YUCK!!).

Samsung never once called us, we had to call almost daily for the last two months to get to this point. If we had lived in a major city they would have taken care of us. If you live in a small town expect problems when dealing with them.

Brad J.,

Switch to component RGB cables and report back!

Seyffort,

Don't let BB dictate what the resolution will be.
It is up to Samsung to make it right if they have to send a certified tech 500 miles to do it.
If Samsung wants to force an exchange, it's up to them to arrange it, not you.
No extra expense should be incurred, period.
Be assertive and firm! You will be taken care of approprietly!

Sorry for the Post to this board.... if you know somebody that this applies to please contact them:

CONSUMERS UNITE! If you purchased an LG RU-52SZ61D 52" DLP television and thought it had the newer HD2+ DLP inside, please contact the Competition Bureau of Canada immediately at: compbureau@cb-bc.gc.ca .....you may be eligable for a cash settlement from LG Canada!

Please read the following:
I purchased an LG RU-52SZ61D 52" DLP television via special order from Futureshop on November 6th, 2004 based on the component specifications that were advertised on the Futureshop web site and the LG Canada web site, and after receiving the product it came to my attention that the newer HD2+ DLP technology that was advertised as being in the product was not so, due to what I felt was an inferior picture quality.

I challenged both Futureshop and LG Canada on what I suspected was older technology that was used inside of this product and they both "assured" me that this was not the case and that the product did indeed have the new technology inside as advertised. The LG representative, even went so far as to say that the older technology version of the product (there were two releases of the product - one with the old HD2 DLP chip and .155mm screen and one with the newer HD2+ DLP chip and a .098mm fine pitch lenticular screen) was never even brought in to Canada as they waited for the new release before bringing the product into the country.

Not really believing either of these company's spokespersons, I had LG Canada send the product's serial number to the manufacturer in Korea. A representative of the manufacturer, emailed me to confirm my suspicions as to the inferior components used in the product, based on the detailed serial number records they keep, indicating all components used in the product's manufacture. He also indicated to me that the "advertised" .098mm fine pitch screen was never incorporated into this particular product either! It was only produced with the lower quality .155mm screen....... another false specification passed on to us consumers by LG Canada!

Now, here is where it gets really interesting......After learning this, LG Canada called me to thank me for bringing this matter to their attention and offered me some "LG promotional trinkets" to consider keeping this older technology version of the television. When I refused to accept this offer and pushed them to exchange my TV for one that had the advertised components inside, they flat out refused indicating that this product was not available via LG Canada due to the logistics and expense that would be incurred to bring in one piece from Korea to satisfy only me.

The LG rep also indicated to me verbally that LG Canada had never ever received any of these newer version HD2+ DLP technology products in Canada! This means that they have been selling the older HD2 DLP technology stock they have in their warehouse as the newer HD2+ DLP technology through all of their Canadian Dealers, and the dealers have been advertising the product to the consumer as having this newer HD2+ DLP technology!

WHAT A MAJOR RIP OFF TO ALL CONSUMERS WHO ALREADY PURCHASED THIS TV!

Futureshop has agreed to allow me to return this product for a full refund, however I do feel victimized by this situation having to go through all of this ordeal with these companies for several months now and ending up back where I started - spending countless hours researching the web for product reviews hoping that this time what I purchase will be what it says it is.
I am sure that all of the other customers that purchased this product would be very disgruntled and feel victimized as well after learning of this deceit from LG Canada and the dealers from where they purchased it.

It should be noted that since sending LG Canada notification of my intent to contact the Competition Bureau of Canada (http://cb-bc.gc.ca/epic/internet/incb-bc.nsf/en/h_ct02141e.html), they have just recently updated their website to indicate the components used inside of the RU-52SZ61D 52" DLP television as being the older DLP technology! You can view this at: http://ca.lge.com/en/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=010301&categoryId=010301&parentId=0103&m odelCodeDisplay=RU-52SZ61D&model=Select+a+model

I guess LG Canada is now finally admitting the truth about what it is that they are actually selling!
Too bad for all of the consumers that already purchased this unit...
Please forward this post to as many newsgroups as possible. Only by uniting together as consumers will we be able to make this company accountable for their false advertising!

My Samsung DLP Story.

I had wanted a new television for awhile. Been researching the newer technologies for last year (LCP, Plasma, DLP, etc.) I settled on buying the DLP since I thought it was the best bang for the buck. I purchased my new Samsung HLP5063 just in time for the superbowel Feb 6 from BESTBUY. Had high def cable hooked up and looked great. Dvds looked great as well, was not pleased with standard cable channels, but did not care too much. Noticed some lip sync issues on some channels, but was not a problem to me.

One week of ownership my television did not turn on. The dreaded three lights of death error. Next day televsion turned on amazingly. Another week of ownership then the three lights of death again. This time TV would not turn on for anything. Called my BEST BUY service (under my 4 year performance plan) and they had a local vendor come and look at it. They wanted to take it into the shop.

The TV is still in the shop to this day. Two light engines and one cooling fan have been replaced. I believe they are working on the 4th problem now. It has been almost 5 weeks without that TV. Two weeks back I had decided to call it quits and went into best buy to ask for a full refund since it was withing the 30 day return period. They could not refund since they had to confirm that local repair shop had the TV. I had the customer service manager write a note on my printed receipt explaining that customer was in within 30 day period and would get full refund if I cane in the following week. My wife convinced me to not return it that week since I really wanted a new set. Since then there have been additional repairs and issues.

Today I reached my breaking point. I brought in my heavy TV stand to best buy (3-22-2005) along with my receipts with the note. The Customer Service manager called TV repair shop to confirm they still had the TV and then my refund was processed. I am writing this as some sort of closure for my ordeal. Currently I plan on saving my money and buy a plasma tv at the end of this year, hopefully that set won't be a lemon.

Take aways from my story.
1. If you have problems with TV set within first 30 days ask for a replacement right away or get a refund.
2. Make sure you purchase an extended performance plan of some sort. After the 30 day period you just have the one year manufacturers warranty. From the stories I have read before sounds like Samsung service blows.
3. Ask to have certain items hooked up to really gage the picture quality. Have them hook a DVD player, playstation, etc.

Good Luck.

PICOSAUCE2005,

I hate to say it, but you became the overly patient victim of a corrupt repair service. That shop took advantage of you right from the start. What started out as a simple Phillips lamp replacement in your home turned into a way for the shop owner to send his kids to college. There is no other post like yours on any forum.

The day the "local vender" said the set needs to go to the shop was the first act of deception. On that day you had the right to demand a replacement set, though all you really needed was an honest technician. Instead you allowed them to take advantage of you.
Samsung factory warranty people were never involved according to your story. Apparantly, you called the BB extended warranty people. Those people involved a corrupt service shop.

Nowhere in your statement do you say that you dealt with the 1-800-SAMSUNG warranty group. Therefore, you cannot say that Samsung service blows. I've dealt with them twice and their warranty service is excellent. The first time was for your exact problem and the technician came the next day with a new lamp.

What people can take away from your story is that you didn't demand a replacement set or a refund on the day of the failure.
Outside of that, you didn't call 1-800-SAMSUNG for a reputable in-home service tech. That's who you are supposed to contact during the first year if you don't demand a replacement during your first 30 days.
You...that's right...you allowed your new set to be taken away to a corrupt service shop for weeks on end. What were you thinking?
Your situation was absolutely resolvable in 24-48 hours.
You allowed yourself to be taken for a ride!

The 63 model is well known for two simple resolvable production issues. One is the lamp and the other is the old style color wheel. When resolved, the set is a real gem for less than $2k. Mine has been trouble-free for a year now.

As an update on our SAMSUNG service nightmare, we had to pay $541 to get a replacement TV for the one that broke within the waranty period. samsung would not give us another option other than store credit. We had a HLN5065, now have a HLP5063.

We bought a service plan with this one so we would never have to go through samsung again.

The sorry part is we really like the TV and did not want a different model. if only samsung's service was as nice as thier tv's.......!!!

So I can honestly say the TV rocks....but if you get one, get the service plan.

I had my screen on my 5063w replaced because of smudges. They put in a new 1 piece screen. The new picture has no more smudges but has a grainy, dusty, snowy look. I thought the old screen's picture looked better. Did anyone else notice this or am I losing my mind? I called Samsung and I think the tech is coming out to put in my old screen. Is there a new model screen that has the 2 screens without the smudges?

I bought my HLP4663WX/XAA in July 2004. I started having the three lights of death around October. It steadily grew worse -- i.e., occurred more and more frequently. I finally decided to call Samsung warranty for the three lights of death after a new (and worse) problem developed: even when the screen did come on, the image was mangled into a weird cross-check design.

The warranty place picked up my t.v. and brought it back two weeks later. It worked for about three hours, then the three lights of death were back. I had the warranty place come back and pick it up again. (They told me Samsung's warranty dep't never told them the screen wasn't coming on, only that the image was garbled.)

Three weeks later -- after I made several phone calls to Samsung's warranty dep't asking when I would get my $3K paperweight back -- the warranty shop finally brought the t.v. back. It now has worked for 5 days. I hope it continues to work.

Before the repairs my PS2 component video connection worked. Now the PS2 only works through the S-video connection. I'm not sure why the repair would affect the PS2 component signal. (I saw some posts elsewhere about this. I recall someone said PS2 component video won't work on the older models. I have no clue why mine went from working to not working.) But I'm afraid if I send it back for another warranty repair I may never get it back.

I have also noticed an audio/video sync delay occasionally. Sometimes it is really, really bad. (I have seen other posts about this subject here and elsewhere.) I'm going to keep watching for it to see whether it occurs under specific conditions. Again, I may just learn to live with it rather than risk going another 2-5 weeks (or longer) without a t.v.

To Samsung's credit, when I complained about the time it took to repair my t.v., they said they would extend my warranty an additional 1-3 months (depending on which customer service rep. I was talking to). And the picture is excellent (at least in HDTV, digital OTA and on DVDs; regular satellite looks much worse than on a tube t.v.). Even so, I am still very unhappy that it took Samsung's warranty people five weeks to fix my t.v. When a customer spends that kind of money, he shouldn't have to deal with these sorts of problems. And it should be totally fixed -- not come back with new problems.

I saw a post from a Samsung tech by the name of Shelley.
She says that certain DLP's have more of a pin cushion effect than others due to the light engine being on a sliding tray that can move slightly out of place during shipping. This causes the curve of the sides that you are describing.

You are correct. There is no convergence in DLP technology...or at least not in single chip versions.

I've heard of that clay face thing in the 85 series.
I'm not sure what your color settings are, but I keep mine at 45. My sharpness is at 30. Contrast at 90. I went into the Setup and "Color Weakness" and went a notch or two over on the green scale, which took some yellow out. I can't say this will work for you, though.

You're going to need to call 1-800-SAMSUNG and get yourself a tech out anyway for that pin-cushion effect if you don't outright exchange it. He can check the color out and make adjustments from the service menu if needed.

I just spoke to the manager who overseas the field engineers in Samsung I brought to his attention that a lot of our customers complaint about the pin cushion effect on 4:3 mode.
here is a copy and paste of his reply.
" The DLP is designed for peak performance in 16:9
(wide) mode. Customers key complaint is 4:3 with perceived bowing or
pincusion effect that is well within specification." that being up to 1/4 of an inch.
"We" the Samsung F.E's are told that up 1/4" of an inch is within specs.
The problem arises from the screen not being perfectly straight and tight up against the back frame of the set. I have come up with a solution which we are going to test on some sets in the days to come, if it works this will resolve the issue or will correct most of the problem.

Thanks for the tips guys (FYI and Shelley). I'll give Samsung a call so they can come out and look at it. It makes sense about misaligned screens. I have noticed some smudges in the screen as if there's condensation or they're touching each other - they tend to go away after it's on for a while.
I'll try the settings you suggested for the "clay face" issue. I feel that the pure whites are often overdriven loosing definition. I've moved my brightness down quite a bit w/o luck.
Aside from this, I love the set. Movies look great!!

David Fenton,

I had the same thing happen to me. I ve had the screen replaced on my HLP5063W due to smudges . I noticed that the repalcement screen was grainy and not as clear the old one . That TV was returned due to other issues ( rainbow effect from light engine). The new TV had a beautiful screen however it also had the smudges and now pin cushion effect. I am going to live with the smudges since I am terrified with the alternative. Unless samsung can assure me of an equal quality screen replacement I will not do it.

I say to the person that claims that these posts are just a fraction of the complaints that he is totally wrong. Here is why :

1. Most people don't bother to go and search on where to post and ask.
2. Most people don't even see the screen smudges
3. Most people don't even notice the rainbow effect
4. Most people don't even hear the wheel noise since the volume is always on.
5. 4 of my co-workers have the same TV and every single one has screen smudges.
6. I had two sets and they both had smudges
I don't know about you but I know quality and statistics . Having six failed samples pulled randomly out of 100,000 is an indication of a superior failure and quality issues. If NHTSA finds that in a randomly picked vehicle sample they will all be recalled. Not to mention that 3 of my friends have the pin cushion effect.

It's true that the 63 series has production issues.
Nobody has to live with them, though.
Others on this forum, along with myself, have the 5063 and are really satisfied with the set. I've had mine almost a year now.

If most people don't bother...
If most people don't see...
If most people don't notice...
If most people don't hear...
then most people either don't have an issue or don't care.
For those that do, there are remedies up to and including replacement with the set of your choice from Samsung Warranty Service.

If I were you, I would call 1-800-SAMSUNG and report each problem you have experienced. Then, I would ask for a 5067 even cost replacement. If I had a few extra bucks I would ask for the better 5674 series.

You and your co-workers have remedies!
It was just a bad production run on one model!
Fractional or not, it's resolvable!

I have called Samsung. I have asked for a new TV . The answer was we fix issues and do not replace sets.
I have tried the so called solution once and have seen the inferior replacement quality. This is not what I saw at the store when the decision was made.
Bottom line I shouldn't have to work so hard along with everyone I know that bought this TV to get what they have paid for.

I was offered a replacement set of my choice.
Another guy on this forum has an HLN with A/V sync lag on PS2 games. They offered him a 5067 at no extra cost. Be persistent. Don't trade out a defective 63 for another defective 63 from the retail store. That trade off isn't getting you anywhere. You can complain on this forum, but that won't get you anywhere, either. Call 1-800-SAMSUNG and tell them you have A/V sync, smudges, whatever and be persistent. Tell them you will call your Attorney General and your local news channel's investigative team if you're not taken care of promptly. Get past their first layer of defence. Be the squeaky wheel.

Need help with closed caption. I have a 50" DLP connected via DVI to a Samsung DVD player HD931. The Samsung 50" menu has the closed caption selection greyed out. The only way I have ever gotten it to work even with the cable box which is connected with component cables is with the old coax input.

DLP4me!

Tim,

It also works with S-Video.
It will never work on component as it's a dumb connection that expects the device connected to it to perform certain functions.
In other words, the set acts like a monitor.

Well I finally received my 3 rd HLP5063W manufactured March 2005. Smudges are finally gone. The 3 rd set however like the 2 before it has the pin cushion effect. Has anyone had any success with service for the pin cushion effect ? if yes what was done to it ? .
FYI I did notice that the new screen is worse when watching regular cable and it is a bit more glossy .

Two Problems Stuck Colours and Flashing Lamp Light

I have a January 2005 HLP4663. This is the 4th unit of this model that has been in my home (yes I am a sucker for punishment). This unit has developed these two problems since I have had it:

1) Stuck colours. When powering on the TV, the picture is occassionally distorted with a very heavy red or blue tint. This problem has been documented by other several people at http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21552

2) Last week, a new problem developed. The TV would not turn on. Instead of displaying a picture, the LAMP light on the power button blinks repeatedly. The TV will not turn on no matter how long you wait. The only solution is to unplug the TV then try again.

1-800-SAMSUNG says they have never heard of this before. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I've had EXACTLY the same problems. Now my tv won't turn on. I'm looking to exchange my hlp5063W for the 2005 model but am not getting anywhere with circuit city. I'm hoping to call samsung and ask for an exchange but am looking for some people that have already done this to give me a little guidance on what they're likely to say and what the issues may be.

1505Main,

I called Samsung about this problem. The support person said that they have never heard of the stuck colours happening before.

I guess I can call for service and have someone start gutting the TV in hopes of solving the problem. Seems like a big hassle though. I wish Samsung would just get their act together with regards to QC on these sets.

You guys trying to save money with the 63 series LISTEN-UP!

There are production run issues with the 63 series sets.

It makes no sense whatsoever to swap for another 63.

The sets are fine after factory warranty technical service.

If you don't have the patience, buy a 74 or some other model.

It's a hell of a lot less frustrating than swapping!

I've had the 63 for 5 months. No problems with the light, color wheel, 3 lights of death. I had smudging 2x, 1 cosmetic problem and a problem with one of the component ins. I bought from Circut City with the extended warrenty. Each time, they came out with a replacement. Problems? Yes. Serious? No. All swaps were scheduled for the weekends and service techs were on time. I've probably jinxed myself now. But, the picture is the best. Whites are white. Blacks/dark colors are not washed out...just incredible. The Sony colors are distorted, too bright. The Panasonic can't handle darks at all. I'm happy with what I have. Hope you are too! Bottom line. Get the extended warrenty. Swapping once near the end of the warrenty period basically pays for the bulb, then you have a whole new set.

I've been reading these posts and several people mentioned tht their set "just turns itself off". Well mine does this also. Have any of you figured out what this is? I haven't seen a response.

To Karin, mine did that and the tech said it's the ballast that needs relpacing. I'ts a 10 minute job. If you're withinn the 1st year call 1-800-SAMSUNG

Now for my question... I had my screen replaced due to smudges. The new one seems different, not as sharp. Especially on INHD when the show their logo on a white screen. The white used to be really white, now it seems almost white/silver looking. If that makes sense.
Does samsung have yet another version of a replacement screen I can call and ask for ????

3 lights of death on a 4663w model (14 days old) Still with in my 30 days at CC. CC Cust. Service rep told me to come by an pick up a new one- I have the warranty too. After reading this board it sounds like the better approach is to call 1-800-samsung, log the issue, dispatch tech and have this set repaired. Any thoughts on appropriate next steps?

Unregistered guest
You just stated the appropriate steps.
It's a 63, so, make sure it sounds quiet and has no screen smudges.

In the mean time, get it to fire up by either unplugging and replugging or during the first few seconds of power up slap the lamp housing area a few times lightly. Then, leave it on 24/7 until the tech arrives.

My tech didn't reset the lamp hour meter.

With power off, on the remote, mute+1+8+2+power, choose "Options". choose "Lamp Reset". Power off until fan kicks off to exit.

Even after reading all of these posts I am still considering buying a HLP5063. I n the last couple posts I see that people refer to the production/manufactured date of the set. How do you tell what that date is in the store. Also I see that most everyone on this forum are complaining or asking questions about the 63 series. Is this the only series that has problems? Is the 67 actually better even though it is the same set just with the tuner card in it? Should I hold off on getting the HLP5063 and save up for the HLP5674?

Since the 74 is also discontinued, I think the price will fall farther as the new 77's, 68's, and others come on the scene this summer.

It's hard to believe that my 63 can be bought for under $2k.
It's really a fantastic set. At this price level it may well be worth suffering a few production hassles.

I really don't like the number of complaints I see about the inferior single layer screen replacement, though. I heard that one 63 owner demanded an old style dual screen replacement and got it. I've not had an issue with my old style screen. It seems the screen smudge issue is not a uniform widespread production failure. It may well be static electricity as first thought.

I have a HLP4674 with slight smudging at both sides, which is not a problem with SD because it falls within the black sidebars. It shows in widescreen on light scenes but goes away within 30-45 minutes. The set will actually make cracking sounds during this process, lending credence to the deformed screen theory. Lightly rubbing the area with a damp clean paper towel works as well. I am waiting for the final word on the PQ of the new screen before attempting to get this one replace as this is a very small hassle vs a screen that is inferior all the time vs the first 30-45 minutes. Turn it on for the evening news and it will be ready for evening viewing.

Just got the new screen today (HLP-5063) Tech installed it in 10 minutes. I think it looks better than the original. Not quite as matted as the original but by no means "shiny". The PQ seems a bit better, and brighter. I kept getting small smudges that I would wipe and the screen would seal back together.

Overall, very happy. AS it was still under warranty the service was free and the tech gave me a few bottles of screen cleaner. Cant ask 4 any more than that!

Screeching/Extented Warranty

I've had my 5065W for about a 18 mos. Love it. But about a year ago, the picture would not come on. Sound but no visual. Samsung warranty had trouble find a tech in my area (New Orleans, LA) but finally did and he replaced the light engine.
Recently, on power up I hear a screeching noise, kind of like a circular saw but higher in pitch. It's intermittent and often goes away after warm up. I use my TV infrequently if that matters. Anyway, is this noise emanating from a fan that cools the bulb or is this a light wheel problem?
Also, Samsung did not offer an extended warranty nor did the retailer. Any suggestions on how to get a warranty on the TV?

FYI
Unregistered guest
Here's a test you can try.

Turn the set on. Before the screeching/high pitch quits, turn it off. The fan will keep running for about a minute, but the color wheel stops the second you turn it off. If the sound quits it's the color wheel. If it continues it's the fan. I'll bet it's the color wheel.

There's a new "air bearing" frictionless color wheel that's very quiet and lasts a long long time.

Part Number **Description **Specification **Price
BP96-00250A ASSY COVER P-COLOR WHEEL DLP(SVC), $157.19

I would call 1-800-SAMSUNG first. Tell them you read on this forum where a guy got his color wheel replaced out of warranty at no charge. It's true! They know about these older wheels failing and are providing new ones to promote good customer service. Tell them that. Don't back down. They will take care of you.

These folks will sell you a warranty.

I purchased the HLN567W from UE in Aug 2003 and aside from failing lamps, I have been thrilled with the performance of the TV. I haven't experienced any smudges or color wheel squeaks, and only a couple of times have I seen the A/V sync problem. I have seen some pixelation (?) of the screen when the video is doing some sort of fast, montage edits, etc, and some edges between color shades as in sky shots or other color shading/fading from light to dark.

I did experience lamp failure within about 6 weeks of owning the TV, but that was covered under warranty -- service was as good as could be expected and I was satisfied. However, I was under the impression that the lamps had something like 15,000 hours of life expectancy. If that is true, the lamp issue really gets under my skin because I bought the extended warranty from UE, but apparently it does not cover lamp replacements. [not happy about that...live and learn] So, tonight I'm looking for sources for replacement lamps (finding them for about $200 no matter where I look).

Last question: Does anyone know the expected life of the lamps?

Thanks...

Yarmo,

Looks like you are approaching 19 months on that lamp. If it's a Phillips it should last anywhere from 6k to 10k hours or more under ideal conditions.
The number of on/off cycles can affect the life. Not using a surge protector or an uninterrupted power supply can shorten lamp life because a power outage that lasts a few minutes can damage the lamp if it's on.

Have you noticed any dimming? It should weaken before failing.
Have you checked the lamp meter? How many hours?

Check eBay for a better price!

Last night I tried to watch a DVD on my 4663. I have my cable box into Component1 and the DVD into Component2. It wouldn't let me select Component2. I went into the menu and it was grayed out, as was the PC input. When I used the button on the set it wouldn't allow me to choose it either.

Oh, and for the record I have experienced the blinking lights at powerup with no picture (required unpluggging to correct) and also power up with everything a purple/blue color requiring a restart.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I bought a 4663w in February 05

- Have the smudge issue
- the out of sync voice issue is annoying
- had the unbalanced screen ( heavy pink red) on power up once in a while.

i can fix the last problem by selecting another source and come back and colora are back

How can I make sure that the replacement screen will be as good as the original one ?

DOes Samsung work on a fix for the out of sync ?
The answe so fa is buy a new amplifier with a delay to compensate.

other wise I love that TV !

Any feedback would be appreciated. If Samsung representatives read that post, please let us all know your plan to fix upgrade that product.

Thank you

There's a good chance that the lamp is defective. If the ballast cannot fire the lamp correctly, strange things can happen. (ie: three lights and purple/blue color) Try a new Phillips lamp.

Disconnect the DVD player. Unplug the set. Power up the DVD player. Reconnect the component cables making sure they are fully seated. Fire up the set. It should recognize the new component connection.

bertrand,

The new screen is a single layer, not two layers that can come together causing blotches.

Samsung can arrange for a replacement to the 5067. The 5067 is currently the only model that doesn't have A/V sync issues.

I am planning to buy the HLP 5063 and was wondering if I needed to buy an extended warranty. I called Samsung and they said that they cover everything during the first year (including lamps). I have also read that if you buy the TV with AMEX card the warranty doubles. Has anyone avoided buying extended warranty for the first two years in this manner? Also, does CC extended warranty start after the manufacturers warranty or does it overlap. I would not want to waste Samsungs 1 yr warranty.

the service plans that are offered are a great investment, especially if the retailer includes the bulb replacement. typically the service plans offered by retailers start from the day you purchase the tv because manf. warranty are usually limited. good luck with buying from cc though, i will never step foot in one of their buildings again.

Anon,

The HLP5674W is what you want. Here's the best prices.

http://ecoustics.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?sort_type=price&masterid=50 29645&isbn=&pid=

Denver,

Get the 4674 and avoid the CableCard issues.
Avoid internal digital tuners while you still can.

Jackie,

If you plan on saving money with the 63 series be prepared.

"The 5063 has well known production issues. All are resolvable through 1-800-SAMSUNG factory warranty service. They are as follows:

1) Premature lamp failure due to Toshiba lamp in a Phillips light engine.
Fix: Replace with a Phillips lamp.

2) Premature lamp failure due to rough shipping.
Fix: Replace with a Phillips lamp.

3) Color wheel high pitched sound or screech sound.
Fix: Replace with new air bearing frictionless color wheel.

4) Two layer screen drawn together by either warping, humidity, or static electricity creating a smudged or blotched effect.
Fix: Replace with new two layer screen or newer single layer screen."

That said, I like the 5063! I happen to own one!
Don't spend too much. Buy online!

Samsung doesn't even list brick and mortar stores in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, yet CC, BB, Tweater, Fryes, and Ultimate Electronics carry them.

Online:

Best price, but currently out of them. Can still order, though!

I've been a reader of the forum for a long tiime and have been considering the hlp5677w as it has the hd2+ chip. The only problem is the size as there is currently no 60"+ Samsung with the HD2+ I've been checking out the Mitsubishi WD62725 which supposedly has the bettter chip than the Samsung 61". Two questions, (1) has anyone had experience with the Mitsubishi DLP's? (2) Is there a problem with the integrated HD decoder in this set as the local cable company supplies the HD box and the Mitsubishi WD62725 also has an anti-glare screen for about $3,500 but the set without the decoder built in and no anti-glare screen is closer to $2,700. Since the cable company provides the decoder is the anti-glare wirth $800 more?? I was relatively sure about buying a Samsung but the larger Mitsu with the right chip is compelling. Help please,,

I think it's great that you read the forum. I'm not sure why you would consider a 77 when you want a larger screen size. I'm not sure why you would consider a Mitsu just because it has an HD2+ chip. I'm not sure why you ask for Mitsu experience on a Samsung thread, either.

That said:
It seems you want to find a good deal and save money, so, the newest xHD3 61" sets coming out soon for around 7k are probably not for you. The 77 and the Mitsu both have CableCard, which is filled with glitches and should be avoided. Internal digital tuners are only good for off-air networks as a STB is required to decode premium HD programming. Mitsu's anti-glare even glares, in my opinion. It's not too good with windows and lamps around, but should be fine in a dedicated viewing room absent of these.

Standard Definition programming will be with us for quite some time. The larger the screen, the worse SD will look, even with sat signal. People who sit back 12-15 feet are better candidates for larger screen sizes. I'm very satisfied with the overall picture quality of DTV sat signal on my 63 series 50" from 10 feet, but I would have preferred the 5674 had it been available last spring.

Does anyone have the issue where
the TV shows vertical bands about
ever inch. Almost looks like a test pattern.
The TV is a Samsung HLP5674W.
The pattern has be intermittent until now.
Prior to last night the vertical bands would
go away after the TV was off over night.

I have a new Samsung DLP HLP5674W coming this Friday... I am a little frightened after reading all these negative stories... I will let you know how it goes.. Should I get a new lamp right away?? Should I have the warranty support number handy next to my sofa??

Hi jcl

I have had my HLN 56 incher for about 2 years. I have had absolutely no problems. The picture is perfect. Of course SD looks like crap compaired to HD because it is crap. Not the TVs problem. In fact it does a fairly decent job on SD considering what it has to work with.

Samsung sells tons of DLP systems. A few will have problems. Statistically, you should fall into the happy group. enjoy

Response to FYI from April 7 post:
I invested in a Monster Power Home Theater PowerBar 1100 at the same time I purchased the HLN567W so the power should be clean. I seems as though it has gotten dimmer recently and the colors seem to be more pastel in shade, but it's hard to tell over such a long period of time. There was also very little dust on and around the lamp housing, so dust doesn't seem to be an issue.

Update on the problem with my HLN567W:
Called UE Service (now handled by WarranTech) and they indicated that I should replace the bulb and see if that fixed the problem. Did as they said, but the problem remains. Now have a technician coming out to take a look.

The problem is difficult to describe. It's kind of a strobing or flashing on the picture that drops it to a non-color negative image of the color picture. It starts off very slight with quick flashes and grows in frequency and severity as you leave it on. Eventually it will get so bad as to be unwatchable and will finally shut itself down with the three LED lights flashing.

Replacing the lamp has only lengthened the time it takes to where it becomes unwatchable, but that cost me $200 USD to find out. I purchased the lamp from SamsungParts.com [J&J Int'l Inc] who was able to answer some of the questions I had. The part number for the lamp is BP96-00224C and is supposedly no longer available having been replaced by BP96-00224J, however, I received the C version anyway. According to SamsungParts.com, these lamps have a life expectancy of 4000 to 6000 hours. Based on average daily use of the TV, one should get about 2-3 years of life out of a lamp. At $200.00 per lamp, you could also say it costs anywhere from 3-5 cents per hour if you get average life out of the lamp.

The following Samsung TV models use this same Lamp:
HLM437W, HLM5065W, HLM507W, HLM507WX, HLM617W, HLN4365W, HLN4365WX, HLN437W, HLN467W, HLN467WX, HLN5065W, HLN5065WX, HLN507W, HLN567W, HLN617W, HLN617WX, HLN617XAA, HLP4674W, HLP5674W

Yarmo,

I don't see that you described this strobing into color negative situation on your last post. The lamp will be a good investment anyway since you have lots of hours on the original. Sure sounds like a video processing problem, especially if it culminates into unwatchable.
Best of luck with the repair.

Everyone's average hours a day is different. I work at home and get up early. My wife stays up late. The set is always on in the background with a news or market channel. At night the wife takes it over. My average is around 18 hours a day. Obviously, I'm hoping for much better than 6000 hours. My local tv guy says he has already seen some go beyond 8000 with no dimming.

Unregistered guest
Here goes another one on the list of.. killer lights? Did what is suggested above and got the number of hours on the light: 407 !! and sometimes it fails. Before this, I called Samsung and they say it is the light for sure. When I asked if there is a "counter for the number of hours on the light", they said "NO, and most probably you have used the 8000 hours already!" (the set is just over one year old (HLN4365W)and I have used it for 407 hours). Is this a clue?: The problem started the first time I switched it ON after about a month being OFF. I thought that lamps don't wear out if they are switched off, yes?. Have no problem installing a Phillips light if this solves the problem, but if this happens again... There is going to be very bad publicity given to my local newspaper and perhaps to news. Any ideas please??

Technician came out to check on the strobing/flashing problem and they told me they had seen several of the problems mentioned in this forum, but nothing like what mine was doing. They think it's a ballast problem, so they're going to replace that and they also said they would replace the color wheel while they were in there. Should return on 4/18 or 4/19 to finish the repair.

On another subject, I see in your post from 3/30 how to check and reset the lamp hours. Mine is currently listed at 4634 hours. Can you tell me where I can find more information (some sort of online manual) that would describe some of the other settings in that utility menu? I don't plan to go in there an 'tinker', but there might be a couple of other adjustments I'd like to make. Thanks for your help and contribution to this forum!

[thanks goes out to the others who have posted as well, but FYI is the only one responding to my posts thus far.] :o)

That's a tough one. I've looked extensively for the service manual. It's like they don't want us in there or something. Before I found the code, I wanted to adjust my audio delay for one of the HD channel programs, then switch it back. My local technician wouldn't give it to me.
I will continue to search!

Hope everything works out for you.

Yarmo,FYI,Anyone,

I've got the same problem with flashing/strobe like lighting similar to yours. My unit is a HLN617WX purchased Aug 03. Light engine was replaced to cure noise problem Apr 04 while under warranty. Lamp was replaced two months ago. The set is no longer under warranty so I am eagerly looking forward to what you find out.
The problem started yesterday and starts as flashing the gets worse with the light areas getting very bright like the contrast is maxed out until they are almost a negative like image. Contrast adj doesn't help. No lights are displayed on the front panel. If you turn off the set and restart it comes on normal for about 10 minutes and then starts the degrading process over again. Tried off and on about 10 times with the same results. Have not left it on long enough to see if it shuts off by itself.
Any help greatly appreciated!

You didn't state whether you bought an extended service plan for your HLN617WX, so I presume you didn't? I know it's kind of too late now, but that is the only real safeguard you have if something goes wrong after the warranty expires.

If you're like me, you tend to weigh out in your mind whether you are likley to use or need the extended service plan. The argument could be made that in most cases with most warrantable items (electronic or otherwise), there is a good chance that you will not need the service plan enough to where it actually saves you money. That is, if one were to just absorb the cost of one or two repairs over the span of a 5-year service plan, you might actually pay less than you did for the ESP. You didn't really ask this, so sorry for the digression.

To come to the point, if it turns out that replacing the ballast fixes my problem, then that is where I would suggest you start. SamsungParts.com lists the ballast for your model at $146.76 [part# BP47-00016A], so that should give you an idea on how much it would be. Figure about double that cost for labor if you hire a local service tech. Even if you don't have an ESP, you can contact 800-Samsung or Samsung.com and find a list of companies qualified to do the work. If you're really brave, you could buy the service manual from SamsungParts.com for $22.

I'll let you know how my situation turns out.

Yarmo,
Thanks for the quick response. No,unfortunately I didn't get an ESP. The set was purchased directly from Samsung where my son works and it wasn't ofered as an option.

Some additional info, When I shut off the set and it cools off for 3 or 4 hours it works ok for approx 2 hours after restarting before it begins messing up.

Looking forward to your results as it's hard to get used to going back to a regular TV after the picture and clarity of a DLP.

Thanks again. Any other thoughts out there?

HLP5674W UPDATE, I received my new set yesterday from Great Indoors (Sears). After about 2 hours of use, had some random flashing of the "three lights of death" and the TV would not turn back on. I let it cool for about 15 minutes, unplugged it, plugged it back in.. and everything is now working well.

I do have the smudges, grayish blobs along both edges of the screen that come and go with temperature and wiping.

I called Samsung today (Saturday), they gave me a local repair shop phone number and transaction number. Of course the shop is not answering their phone today. Samsung said they faxed a repair order to the shop. I will probably be able to reach them on Monday... I will send another update.

By the way, I am using this set with a DVD player (HDMI input), and a PHOENIX, AZ Cox HD DVR Cable Box Explorer 8300HD (Componet video). The only HD channels that seem to come in with the correct aspect ration are 708(PBS HD), 721(INHD), 722(INHD2), 723(Discovery HD), 724(Universal HD). The rest of their "HD" channels come in with a 4:3 aspect ratio and black bars on the sides.

Does anyone else have this problem with HD aspect ratio and COX?

Jcl, Not all the programs on the other stations are broadcast in HD. Check out titantv.com for a list of the HD programs and when they are on the other channels like CBS, FOX, ABC and CBS for your provider and area.
