New Samsung plasma 2 HDMI in,composite in, digital/opt out.
New DirectTV HD reciever
Older 5.1 amp/reciever 1 digital coax in, 2 optical
Okay 1st thanks for anyone who cares to help

- 1 HDMI from the HD reviever to the TV
My options are(i think) to go from the HD receiver to the amp via Digital coax or optical from the tv to the amp. Because of other needs for the coax I might should use optical.

-2 1 DVD component to the TV.
It has 1 digital coax. My only choice here is to coax to the amp.

-3 I'm about to get an Xbox 360 not sure what it will have for audio.

I think my main question is when you go hdmi->tv->optical out->receiver do I keep all 5.1 capabilties or would it be better to not pass any audio through the TV via HDMI and always go straight from external device to the reciever.

thx again

Hi Tp

yes never optical out of tv to reciever

just hook up hdmi to tv then digital out of each component.

tuner out of tv is inferior to bluray and hd reciever tuners with 5.1
