Yes - and I have it hooked up the way they tell me to - but still no surround sound for the TV - only TV speakers.

This happened to me. The problem was that I neglected to turn off my TV's speakers through the option menu on the TV. If you don't do this your TV will not know to send the sound to your receiver...it will continue to use it's own speakers.
Assuming it is a regular DirecTV box and not a High Definition DirecTV Box -Go from the DirecTV audio out to your HT Audio In - Switch to AV 1 or AV 2 on your HT.
