Speaker Recommendation needed

new-at-this-speaker-stuff
I have a stereo that I think is "decent" (?) - got it at a garage sale. It is a Yamaha DSP A700 amplifier with a seperate AVS-700 AV selector. I have a Yamaha SW100 subwoofer. I would like to replace my old fashioned big box floor speakers with smaller speakers. My house is small - the living / dining combo is 25' x 12.5' with 8' ceilings, wood floors, and lots of echo.

Can you suggest speakers for my stereo that would be small with decent quality for the price? I would like something mid range - not cheap but "really awesome sound" would probably be lost on me. I don't think I *need* surround sound but the stereo would certainly support it! I listen to "all" music, blues, swing, techno, jazz, hip hop...

p.s. built-in stereo speakers are not an option because I'm selling in a couple of years.

My research thus far has turned up the PSB and the Paradigm Atom/Titan. I think I am now convinced that BOSE is not a good option (although I really like their small size)

I also liked the Bose for the size, but came to realize they are over-hyped and over-priced...Take a look at these, i bought them, sound is great and size is ok...

Your best bet is Merak MT66. I have purchaced 2 pairs for myself and for my father, sister and a couple of musician friends. They are THE best bargain on the market right now, period. They are a subdivision of Axiom Loudspeakers. They have been compared with speakers in the 600.00 to 1,000.00 range and are available for 249.00 a pair and if you are lucky like me to find a discount store who carries them, you will pay about 120.00 CND a pair !!!!!!!!!! You will find them at:

Don't forget to read the review by Alan Loft (ex-editor Sound and Vision Magazine...)

For a match with Yamaha I don't think you can beat the Paradigm Performance Series. The Atom[$189pr] and Titan[$219pr] are amazing. There are several reviews of these speakers on the reviews section of this website. I would suggest you read them and then go hear them. For the money these speakers are unbeatable, especially with Yamaha.
