What's going on when there are no scratches but pops every so often on some LPs? I just bought a phono (Pioneer) and received it today and it's in pretty good shape. The records I have look VG. I just balanced the arm according to instructions I found online but it said adjusting the anti-skip tension is different for every phonograph.

What is "anti-skip tension"?

Sorry, my internet bookmarks are missing again today (thank you, Yahoo). Place "turntable set up" in a search engine and you can get more helpful details on tonearm set up.

You are probably hearing a combination of static electricity and the dust it attracts. The vinyl and other materials used in manufacturing an LP creates a static charge when you pull the record from the sleeve. This is especially true when the humidity in your room is low due to the furnace removing moisture from the air. The problem is made worse by a paper inner sleeve for the disc.

Try a good carbon fiber or micro fiber record cleaner. You can find them at several aftermarket audio dealers such as Elusive Disc or Music Direct. You should also consider washing your discs to remove some of the materials which cause static to build up. A vacuum wash/dry system is best and can be found for around $200 and upwards depending on the sophistication you want in the mechanics of the cleaner. For a cleaning system without the vacuum machine look at the middle of this thread; https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/322275.html

This says the anti-skate mechanism is a tension spring and varies from turntable to turntable.

I clean them with a micro-fiber cloth used to clean eyeglasses. Where can I find plastic sleeves?
