I've been dabbling with the idea to try some tube gear after listening to some CJ equipment at my local hi-fi shop. I've come across an AMC CVT2030 for about $275.

Is this a good "starter" tube amp or would my $275 be better spent elsewhere?

.

I don't know the amp in question but I would venture a guess that $275 is quite a different price than you saw on the CJ gear. I would place as much faith in this $275 tube amp sounding like you remember the CJ unit as I would a $275 solid state amp sounding like a Mark Levinson product.

Good point Jan. I'm certain this amp wouldn't approach the CJ stuff, but thought it might be a good unit to play around with.

I would be comparing the AMC amp against my Rotel RB-1050... basically a low end tube amp against a low end ss amp.

I think I'm gonna pass on the AMC. Did some research and found there are some reliability concerns with this amp. Also learned that the tubes are soldered onto the board instead of in sockets which should be an indicator of the build quality (or lack thereof).
