$2500 is for the receiver alone, x?
Do you want to soundproof the room or acoustically maximize it?

Klipsch are among the easiest to handle. You want a warm sounding receiver - Pioneer, Harman Kardon, Marantz.

You'd do better buying Internet direct speakers, but of the 2 listed, get the Polks cause the Synergies are awful.

Raider,

If you want to listen mainly to music, why not consider a 2-channel system? You'll get far more quality that way.

Just my $0.02, so don't yell at me...

OK, I get it. I'm not sure how much the high definition audio formats will take off but if that's what you want...

Please note that your room is likely to exhibit a significant bass boost at around the 40 - 60 hz mark because it's 12' square. The only really effective way of dealing with this will be a couple of bass traps in the corners. Bass traps are a bit unsightly although they can be bought in a variety of colours usually. I can vouch for RPG but wouldn't know who to recommend in your area. The best would be to have an acoustic engineer vsiti you - there are bound to be one or two in your area - who would measure your room and recommend appropriate measures to help you control the reflections and bass. Room treatments can be expensive, bass traps cost around $200 typically (here in the UK).

On the subject of receivers, you aren't likely to need a very powerful one, just a reasonably good one. I don't have experience of the internet-only brands (e.g Outlaw), but in the usual brands, Denon is a good choice, particularly this year's models which seem to have better load handling than older ones. Look at something lkike an AVR2106 or better.

Musically, most of the time you will get better results with full range speakers, so look at the usual suspects such as B&W, KEF, or the internet-only brands such as Athena, Axiom. If you want quality brands, look at Dynaudio, Totem, ProAc (Art! :-) ) but you may find it difficult to fit into your price bracket. Also, I suggest thyat smaller speakers may be the more prudent solution since the room is square and you don't want to excite it too easily. So standmounts are the solution here.

A sub would be your 0.1 channel, but in that room you're going to have to use it prudently. I recommend manufacturers who specialise in subs only such as Velodyne and REL. Velodyne is particularly interesting in your case since they have an element of room EQ cleverness. You don't need a big sub to go pretty deep in your room. Velodyne's SPL800R would be my choice in this situation, but again, I may be breaking your budget here. Internet-only you'd be looking at Dr. HSU or SVS.

You could also consider a quality sub/sat solution. M&K make excellent solutions of this type (I've just ordered mine) but they're not cheap of course. Look at M&K's K-series, not pretty but spectacular value (M&K also make excellent subs). If you must have something pretty, look at KEF's new KHT3005 which is very good indeed (just not sure of the price where you are).

I hope this has helped a bit.
Regards,
Frank.

Frank,

I've considered the M&K systems, and apparently you have some experience with them. How musical are M&K speakers (for 80% music/20% other)? Do you know which of their systems are better than others if the purpose is primarily for music?

Thanks

Jon,

If you had said 50/50, then M&K would be my choice. They do music reasonably well, and they do music better than any others I've heard which are aimed primarily at the surround market. However, for similar money you can get a better musical rendition, albeit at the expense of the surround capability (primarily steering suffers most).

In your situaton, with a brief of 80% music, I would focus on that and choose whatever is the most musical solution for you. Most brands have a surround offering. Add the other speakers as and when you can because it won't be a bad solution, just not optimised for that purpose. At least you will have got the best musical solution for you, which accounts for 80% of your listening.

I have experience with the more successful sub/sat M&K systems, being the K-series, Xenon series and 850 series. I also have some experience of their SP150s. I found the 150s very good indeed, but for the same money I could easily beat them for music. Surround-wise they're awesome of course! :-)

Regards,
Frank.

RAIDER,

Around $1,700.
http://ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/spkrlist.html
-CMT-340 SE Mains
-CMT-340 SE Center
-CBM-170 SE Surrounds
Add an SVS PB-10 subwoofer
http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10isd.cfm

For a receiver:
Yamaha
http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?dp=E2F2C21272E6021253E39363938357E3736373731 36313&stk_code=yamhtr5890
Pioneer
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product_Id=4111547&JRSource=googlebase.d atafeed.PIO+VSX1016TXVK
Harman Kardon
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=HAAVR635&is=REG&Q=& O=productlist&sku=353178

With the above 5.1 system and any of the receiver I listed, it would leave about $200 for acoustic treatments.

-Michael
