I'm looking for a place to buy good stand-alone subwoofer drivers (no box included). my budget is about $1500, i doubt im going to spend that much on a stand-alone driver. I plan to build a box myself since i can't find any good accoustic suspension subwoofers these days. post me some links, thanks alot!

try www.madisound.com. they have some pretty expensive subwoofer drivers there. dont know how good they are but i would expect them to be pretty good. here are two that are pretty expensive but not car audio subs

i'm trying out something similar but on a much smaller budget. you could also try www.partsexpress.com.

another good source for high end drivers is solen.ca.

if you REALLY want to do some heavy duty comparison shopping... check this DIY portal out:
http://www.worldtubeaudio.com/directory/categories/kategorie_80.htm
which includes links to all 3 of the sources mentioned so far.

if you're going DIY, you really don't need to spend $1500... even if you weren't doing it yourself, HSU makes some killer powered subs under $1000 but they're ported. i'm with you there... i hate ported boom... sealed punch rocks.

if you're budget is $1500 and you want to move an insane amount of air... get a fostex 32 inch woofer LOL.

if you're looking for acoustic suspension though, you're looking for speed and sound quality though.

heck... buy my 12" sub! as soon as i get maggies, i want to get rid of that gut massager and get the speed and detail of planar bass along with the rolloff that i like better.

i bought a $100 MCM cabinet, lined it with 3/4" MDF and 3" foam wedges (4" in the back) and still get pretty deep bass out of that $35 generic woofer in a tiny space (maybe just over 1 cubic foot)

if you spent just $500 on a DIY sub, you could get a great amp, driver and build the hech out of a dead silent enclosure. if you're going DIY, then buid an enclosure with two layers of MDF, or if you're really ambitious, two SAND FILLED layers. (i'd hate to have to move a sand filled sub LOL)

a POSSIBILITY might also be to look into overpriced auto woofers. many of them are designed to move alot of air through excursion in tiny sealed enclosures. sounds like a tight air spring to me.

people in the auto forum would know more about that... besides... it's about time some of us in the home forum start asking questions in the car forum as many times as they've asked their questions here. LOL

regardless of where you go... give solen a looksee too. they offer a few brands that madisound and parts express don't and if you're at least a little bit curious about the lower budget end of the spectrum, check MCM out. (one thing though... the MCM woofer boxes described as 3/4" MDF are only 3/4" in the front and back. that's why i lined my cabinet.)

you can get a killer woofer for $300 easily and a darn nice one for $100.

if you're really serious about designing a sub, try to find an online resource that explains how to use thiele small parameters to design an enclosure with the system Q and resonant frequency you're looking for. then, you can also guage what the -3dB frequency for a given driver is in a certain volume. radioshack sells a handy guide that has thiele small formulas for about $7, but i bet you can find the info online for free somewhere.
