So i was looking at the specs of this speaker:
http://www.axiomaudio.com/m80ti_main.html

it operates at 4ohms.. now here is the kicker.
i have a very old amp (1984) AKAI AM-A70 receiver. i can't find anywhere online, and god forbid if i have the manual somewhere.. but i have no idea how to check if i can run 4ohm speakers off of this receiver. if any of you can help, please help!

The receiver most probably has an 8 ohm output, base soley on its age.

You might find a manual at any of the following sources:

http://www.vintageaudiomanuals.com

http://www.treasurechestcorp.com

http://www.servicemanuals.net

I hope this helps.

ok, question for you then, what if i were to drive this 4-ohm speaker with a car amplifier? they default to 4ohms right?

You need to look at the specifications of the amplifier you want to use. Many are rated for a 4 ohm load and many are rated for a 2 ohm load. In either case, you could safely connect the 4 ohm speaker.
