I have a dayton hpsa1000 rack amp Measured power output: 512 watts RMS into 8 ohms @ 0.09% THD, 1,024 watts RMS into 4 ohms What I think I want for a home theater sub is a single 18 with tuning at 17 to 19 hz. Any suggestions on what I might look into?

Duh, what else would I be doing.

I am assuming that was a joke.. because I don't have any money. I am trying to look into a part-time job though.

Sean: There are a lot of options available, and I'm not sure what you want from the sub.

What's your room size?
What volume levels are we trying to achieve?
What's the IN-ROOM response you're trying to achieve?
Is any music going to be listened to?
Budget??

I find it hard to recommend anything without knowing these things. The box design is very important, and different drivers will allow more or less flexibility.

I can say that the Aurasound NS18 is a driver that I like personally (and plan to use). Don't think too much about the power rating.

I live in a small apartment. While this isnt the ideal place to use a 1000 watt rack amp I plan on using it in the recommended 90 db range. I want to buy the right sub and be done and ready for when I move into my own home when ever that might be. As of now my main focus is a sub that will play 19 hz and up since my subsonic filter is set for 18 hz by the factory. I want to focus on home theater with this sub. I have two cerwin vega dx7's for the music. (a 12 mid and tweet in each speaker) I also have a 10 inch 150 watt powered onkyo sub but I can see that leaving after this project is done. In room response desired would be 19 hz and up to where ever needed for movies. My budget is about 265-300 for the sub.

In a small apartment?
sean, have you read about sonic nodes?
20Hz in that space that small will destroy homes around you, and leave you homeless pretty quick.

Hit the clubs for your fix, man.

Unless your neighbors are Convinced you are DEAF, they will storm your apartment and rip your legs off at the first near-sub sonic blast from some movie.

Homeless? Yeah, and all your stuff will be out on the curb when you get out of the hospital!

Would I still be in trouble at recommended db levels for movies?

If relocating due to eviction is not trouble, then no.

Sean,
Since you already have a 1000 watt amp, I would consider a HSU or SVS cylinder sub. You will mainly find them used on Ebay or Audiogon. The nice thing about the cylinders is they go vertical, so they take up little floor space in an apartment. Like others said though, your neighbors may not be very neighborly.

If you sell your amp, there are many more subs available that are self powered. Because of your demands, I would recommend SVS PB13 ultra AV123 MFW15 (http://av123.com/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/produc t_id,265/category_id,9/manufacturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,37/) EPIK conquest or tower epiksubwoofers.com Here is a list of subs with a point scale & prices:
