I had a marantz SR5500 and hook it up with SCS 178 (5.1 JBL speakers). It is quite nice for movies but sound not very dynamic with music (it may cause from 4-Ohm JBL). Hence I want to purchase for one pair speaker for music and incorporate with 5.1JBL for 7.1 HT, it is possible? any your recommendations are highly appreciated.

DD, how is adding 2 more speakers going to improve musical peformance?
Is it the 2nd zone in another room you have in mind?
How does the unit perform in bypass(tone defeat)?

DD,

with a $500 budget I would actually include a decent subwoofer too, the JBL SCS sub is totally useless.

Suggestion:

Athena AS-B1.2 speakers, $120 from audioadvisor.com

with

b-stock Hsu STF-2 subwoofer from hsuresearch.com, $350 shipped (call them directly for availability)

or

Acoustech H-100 subwoofer, $280 shipped

Good point, Jorge. Sometimes we get carried away trying to spend other people's money:-)

Next question....What is available in your area and what have you auditioned?

Thank you you guys very much!

I am in Singapore, so it is not many brands to chose. Here i think Bose, Mission, JBL, Acountics Audio are available. I would love to hear some pop and some clasic musics, not preper rock.
Thanks for any suggestions.

From your selection, I would go with Mission, very refined, but some think it is a little bright, I don't believe that it is. I like the way it plays classical and jazz. Haven't heard Acountics Audio so I can't comment on those.

Check out if there are B&W speakers out there.

I guess that americans do not regard them highly because I hardly see someone recommending B&W in this forum (maybe there are many better options in US...), but I find them excellent and they go well with Marantz.

The DM-303 and DM-600 S3 are great bookshelf speakers and retail in the pricerange $300 - 350/pair, in the US.

good luck!

Americans??? Jorge you really shouldn't make sweeping generalizations, it is in poor taste.
