G'day

i'm immigrating to oz in july and was wondering if i should do a few upgrades i had in mind before i get there as i believe the prices for european hifi goods are more expensive in oz. obviously.

i've been trying to find on the internet, without luck, the names/url's of shops that stock arcam, rel and dynaudio. if anyone can help me out in this regard, or happens to know the prices for the nad m3, rel stata 5, and dynaudio audience or focus line, i would be most gratefull.

also, are there any good print or online classifieds where one can find used hifi good?

and has anyone imported used goods from the states? there is a rediculous amount of good cheap gear on audiogon but i'm wondering if the oz goverment would hit one with import duties and the likes if it was 2nd hand stuff?

cheers for any help

b

are there any hifi shows/exibitions down under?

If you are migrating you can always claim all of this as your personal furniture and accessories and you usually have up to 5 years to bring stuff in without having to pay import taxes.

for used equipment check out audiogon.com, and saturday audio exchange.

Stof,

If Bvan is migrating from the US then he needs to consider our higher voltage (230-240) before he brings any electrical with him.

Here's an interesting Aussie site worth checking out:

thanks for that all of you.

i'm actually coming from south africa, though i'm currently in denmark, land of dynaudio, dali and densen. s.a is pretty expensive, worse than oz even, and when you take into acount the average standard of living you can understand why theres not too much of an audiophile community there.

cheers

Don't tell me you are one of those South African's leaving for the whiter pastures of Australia. I thought that stopped years ago.

wow! had a look at the prices for the rel strata. is the equivalent of £1200.

in U.K it is £700. why the huge markup when it can be had for nearly £700 in the states aswell? deos the u.s have no import duties i wonder?

yeah, thats the site i used to make currency conversions.

not sure if i follow though. the rel is oz$2800 at tivoli hifi. that translates to £1200. but in u.k its £700. thats a 170% markup. pretty steep.

an economics degree and i still dont understand how they can ship all the way to the states and still come out near the U.K mrrp?

cheers

We also have an import duty, value added tax (gst 10%) and some of our gear obviously has excessive markup. That's why I never pay full retail.
