ONKYO TX-SR601 = $349.99
HARMAN KARDON AVR-230 = $359.99

Which receiver is better for the money. I will be using this receiver to power a 5 channel surround sound system consisting of CV V-12F mains, CV V-5C center, and CV V-5M bookshelves. This system will be placed in a small apartment living room. I need something to be very user friendly because I am a beginner. I would like something that has the newest features so I can use it with a new HDTV and progressive scan dvd player I will purchase in about a year. Thanks for any input.

Will this be used more for surround music or movies or two channel music?

It will primarily be used for movies.

They both should work well for you for movies. My preference would be the HK, because I believe the sound is more detailed. I would take the remote for the onkyo though.

I would say the Onkyo is more detailed, but the H/K a little warmer.

Do both the Onkyo and H/K have component video switching?

Rack04: the ONKYO TX-SR601 and H/K AVR-230 both have component switching. They each have 2 component inputs and one component output.
