Do I need a new receiver to get sound from a new TV?

I have had an Onkyo HT R500 receiver (as part of my Home Theater system) since 2003 or so. The sound worked well with my older Samsung HDTV. I recently upgraded to a Sony Bravia 4K TV. The new TV does not have analog audio inputs (red/white cables), but it does have a digital optical cable as does my receiver. I connected the digital optical from receiver to TV, but get no sound. What am I missing? I inquired at Best Buy where I bought the TV and the sales person told me I needed to buy a new receiver. All I really want is sound (I don't even care if it is 5.1 from the TV.) I think there must be another way. Thanks for any help.

Never mind- figured it out- I do not need a new receiver. It is a bit more awkward with the new TV -- seems I need to use more remotes. Saved myself $400! LOL. I can play my Pandora via the Blue Ray and at least get Dolby Pro Logic through the Onkyo system- much better then the TV sound.
