No reason you couldn't use a stereo amp. But AudioSource AMP-5.1A 100 Watt Power Amplifier is a mono amp and I know etronics.com sells it at $125.

Try doing a google search for that audio source mono amp. Maybe it is available fromsomeone in Oz.

Marantz and Outlaw Audio sell very high quality mono amps--but the Outlaw amp is 200 watts into 8 ohms and 300 watts into 4 ohms and costs $299.

The only way this will work, is if you use a tube amp, this way the impedance mismatch won't cause amp problems, with a solid state amp 6 on 8 is no good. Will it work? Yes, but it could cause problems. Safest bet with solid state: Hook two six ohms in series (12 ohms) or connect it to the 4 ohm amp position (if avalible). My home theater speakers are also 6 ohms.
