"One thing to notice about Johnson's music is his genius as an arranger. Like most delta players, he alternates between playing a bass or rhythm line and a treble, lead line. The extraordinary thing about him, for me, is his ability to establish a line so solidly that we continue to hear it, in our minds, as he stacks other parts on in succeeding choruses. The effect is orchestral, though he plays only one line at a time. Think I'm nuts? (Well, yeah, but that's beside the point.) Go listen to Walkin' Blues, then listen to it again. When you hear the polyrhythmic quality of playing different syncopations against each other, something amazing happens."
