I think your reviewing technique is all wrong Nick. I need some drawings, some graphs and detailed specifications... and ideally, a Powerpoint presentation.

And I'm gonna have to go ahead and ask for that by tomorrow morning.

Not too fond of either, but pair it up with 5 speaker of your choice and this should beat the snot out of any HTIB system.

I went ahead & purchased that HK DVD48 for <$50; I figured this will be my last DVD player, and perhaps my last CD player, so I might was well upgrade to the unit with all the bells & whistles.

If anyone is in the the market for a very nice DVD37 (same as DVD38) on the cheap, PM me.

Bought a pair of these. Why? Just for the heck of it - I'm hoping this will be a lot of speaker for just $300. After speaking with Eric mine will be the same but with a different finish and a six inch driver. Long term they will likely serve as rears on my HT setup, making the risk in buying small, however they will also get lots of dedicated 2 channel play especially if they excel in that area.

Eric is a pretty cool guy, and is very prompt in replying to communication. He didn't have any of the imbuya left, nor the 5.25 driver, so he let me choose another finish (and gave me a lot of options to choose from) and despite the larger driver he honored the posted price. I'm really looking forward to hearing them.

Of course, I've not heard the Tekton's yet but if you are looking for speaker bargains then needless to say you have to keep an eye on Audiogon!

I'd love to try some FRSD speakers one day, but would have to listen before buying (even at the prices Tekton sells at). As far as I know they aren't ideal for rock music. I notice they don't make many two-way speakers, but they do have one with an 8 inch driver that goes down to 30Hz and has a 95dB sensitivity rating. I bet it kicks some serious @$$! It seems that Eric made it with tube amps in mind, but surely it can also work well with solid state amps?

Thanks Chris. I'll post my impressions after they are broken in. I am not buying them with great expectations in mind, as I said probably a HT speaker, but if they are better than that then they will for sure get lots of 2 channel play. I am hopeful this will happen. It looks like Eric puts a lot of care into his product, the finish itself I think will compare to speakers costing $1,000 or more. For the price I decided, what the hell!

Nuck, recently I heard both the Glenair and Sterling. The Glenair has a 15 inch driver, the Sterling a 10 incher. They are both awesome. They seemed to do everything right, though I doubt I will ever spend that much on a pair of speakers unless I win the lottery or something. These probably don't belong in a speaker bargain thread.

I am kind of finalizing what my system will look like now, and will probably report some changes soon. I think I'll be done for a while once I get this all sorted in the coming weeks (I think I've said that before a time or two). But I have realized this much: no speaker I have heard yet has sounded as great to me as the PMC TB2i. That's the one speaker where, after finishing a song I just had to hear how this other song sounded, then another, then another, etc. So I think I am zeroing in on this as the one to buy for the long run...I will start saving my pennies now. I think it will either be the PMC or a Tannoy dual concentric, but not from their Prestige line (too expensive!). Tannoy and PMC are generally pretty easy to drive, so hopefully either of these can work well with tubes. I'm sure one day I will want to give those a shot. What is the magic number in terms of sensitivity for tubes to work well? The PMC is 90dB.

Dan, there is no magic anything.(except for Roy Orbison!) to be had.
Sensitivity is linear to volume until something stops giving.
Pay attention to the sensitivity rating quoted as weighted and how.
In chamber will likely yeild another 3db in room, but that is a proper room!!!

Nothing will replace your listening.
You would not be the first customer to lust after the PMC at all!

Picked up my Tekton's from the post office yesterday. Holy $&!%! I will post some pics in the near future but suffice to say that the build quality of these speakers is just incredible. I paid a lousy $300 for these things but they look like $2,000 speakers. Bubinga wood (whatever bubinga is, lol!) in kind of a semi gloss finish, and they sound dead when tapped on. I only checked to make sure they work and so haven't listened to them much yet. I won't give them some good listening time for a little while still, but they sounded really nice for the little bit I had them playing. Just incredible build quality for the price, I was totally floored when I first laid eyes on them and still can't believe it. Maybe this says something about the markup on name brand speakers vs. what a one man show can produce. Eric does very nice work indeed. They are a little smaller than the speakers I typically like, but I've got a sub so I'll just have to dial it in right.

No Merrill driver, hence the "knock-off" moniker.

I may be wrong (I often am), but I once had a link to a Chinese speaker manufacturer that supposedly was the source of the Merrill drivers; the company had dozens of drivers, and the minimum purchase was something like 50, but the drivers only cost a few bucks a piece.

I fell in love with the R90 the first time I laid eyes & ears on them, they sounded deceptive large given their diminutive size, and were as solid as any speaker I've ever seen.

I regret not having kept a pair when decided to get rid of my surround set-up.

Yeah, I'm trying to talk my wife into an early birthday present. I got rid of the Audioengines and picked up a vintage Marantz receiver that I'd like to use in the office. I have been using the HT rears which sound very nice with the Marantz, however I really don't want to be carrying the speakers from room to room. For $79 it's hard to go wrong.

Sorry for the late reply...big storm yesterday and the power was out. I did get the Jamo's and they are breaking in. Definitely good for the $79. Not as good or dynamic as the big Wharfie standmounts but very good highs and midrange for such a tiny speaker. Still fussing with the low end...more later this weekend.

I'm using a Marantz 2220B receiver that has been recently serviced and is working very well. I have the Diamond 9.0 as rears in the HT and will do a comparison soon. I can say that at first I liked the 9.0 because of the better bottom end and greater dynamics but I think that the Jamo's have better low level resolution and so now it's kind of a toss up. More later...

Deffitnetly i would say the SLS Encores were 1 of the best deals going, got it paired with the absolutely best value the new MiniWatt N3 $378 amp,and its flatout magical.I got the SLS Encore without ordering since i live in Denver about 25 miles from the warehouse for $269,their my favorite speaker in the house, and theirs a lot speakers in here, the skiing ninja X-over upgrade with the Norez will be going in real soon, and it will be a substancial upgrade.Danny Richie(GR Research) the guy that designed all the X-series except for the veneer has a kit called the N3,that i will be building soon, and its a real killer $389 for the stock kit,and the cabinet plans a stone cold steal!

I hate to say, Nick. I'm driving them with that old Marantz receiver and I don't have a good source or decent cabling with them. I never turn them up so I'd be lying if I said I really knew how they perform. I think that they have good midrange for low volume listening. The bass leaves alot to be desired even for a 4 inch driver, though it isn't any worse than the Paradigm Atom. I still think that they are a bargain for low volume listening in a home office but in all honesty, they haven't been tested.

I believe that the Atom v5 starts to drop off at 90hz...not very extended, Freddie. For punchy bass in a tiny, cheap speaker please refer to the Wharfie Diamond 9.0. I think that the little Jamo is a fun little speaker.

Seems like Harman is blowing out the harman/kardon DVD-48 on eBay. I picked one up a few months back for about $40, and you would be wise to pick one up while you still can. Yeah Chris the Gini's are very nice i almost pulled the trigger on them about a year ago, before i got the X-Static.I just moved to L.A. from Colorado so i did speaker clean up,sold the XLS,X-Static,and a few others and i only have the Hsu hb1mkII and the Diamond 8.1s,and now in my new room come tuesday my favorite small monitor the Usher S-520 paired with its new companion SW-520 bass stands, ordered both from Usher for $1170 with free shipping been waiting on these bass stands for a year and a half and they have finally released them but I probably should have bought the S-520's a long time ago retail is $479 for the S-520's and $899 for the SW-520 bass stands but directly from Usher the whole setup is $1170 with free shipping.Theirs a review on 6moons in the September issue on the new setup with a award, and theirs a old review on the Gini's with the bass stands in Stereomojo and they won a award these 2 setups are 2 of the best around for up under $2500,Stan at Usher USA says the new combo kills their more expensive ($2100) cp6311 and they are a damn good speaker in their own right.

Tawaun, those bass stands look awesome. It seems like something that should be an option on more speakers.

Good time of year to be in Cali. Don't disappear for so long this time!

Im stationary now Dan,I'll be around.I think your right, when its thought out and done correctly, theirs better intergration the speaker speaks with 1 voice and they are very cohesive.Im not a fan of Wilson Audio's sound, but the 1 thing they do very well is intergrate as a whole, every generation of the Watt/Puppies have done this from what i have heard, the isolation of these type of setups makes a difference as well.Everyone that knows me on here know im a huge 2-way lover the reason is they speak with 1 voice and are better intergrated than multiway speakers,so that makes them have a better shot at good soundstaging and imaging,my Swan F5's done this very well they disapeared and imagaged better than every 2 way I've ever had or heard, from my experiance this is the evolution of how to design a multiway speaker,a modular 2 piece setup, every 1 of them i have heard have done things special even if i didnt fall in love with their sound the Verity's and Von Schwikerts do this very well to,this is the very thing that attracted me to the Gini's last year, setups like this actually sound like 1 piece of cloth like single driver speakers and the very best 2-ways.

I have to add the Hsu hb1 mkII to this list as a bargain as well their blowing out the piano black versions for a $149 a piece, and SVS has released their SBS-02 for $269 up from $219 from the 01 version but with big improvements on the drivers and crossovers. And on a higher scale the Wharfedale Opus2 3 way monitors are going for $1299 for the satin finishes at wildwestelectronics.com the regular price is $2599,i came ubber close to getting these.

Jeez? STO Sound & Vision, which once sold the Wharfedale EVO2-10 for $299/pair, currently has them on "sale" for $459!

Tawuan, I think for driver integration the best I've heard are my Quad 12L2. I'm sure there are better out there, but these are the best that I've heard. I didn't truly relate to what people meant when they mentioned driver integration, but once I heard the Quads I did. That said, I've now got a pair of Tannoy Revolution DC6 to compare them to. My first dual concentric speaker. They are one of the most striking speakers I've seen in person, and I expect they will sound just as good. The Evo2-10 did not work out for me, but I suspect the guys here were right when they pointed to set up issues. But I didn't listen and jumped to buy something else. I've put more energy into getting things right with my Quad/Exposure set up, and consequently the sound quality has only improved. The cherry finish on the Evos was absolutely gorgeous.

Dan you ought to hear the Quad ESL 57&63 they will give you a crash course for driver intergration, they are without a doubt the best I've heard at it.

The Evo8 is a stellar little speaker, the chuffing problem i had with them was very irratating, and Wharfedale didnt want to do anything about,if their at $299 those and the Hsu hb1mkII are the best deals around.

I just don't get it, how many of those do you think they will sell? I suppose if they sell 100, it's $1,000,000, so maybe they know what they're doing? And we all know McIntosh sells everything it builds, and usually for MSRP, right?

Perhaps you're right? Seriously, how many $10K CD players do you think McIntosh can sell in a year? Remember, while they might be the most prestigious player in this game, they're not the only player.

They are prestigious but nowhere near the most prestigious, not for cd players anyway.
