Quick help please. Speaker vol way too low with new reveiver

Hi,
I just brought a Pioneer VSX- D412 receiver and i already have 2 Pioneer speakers (approx 5 years old). When i plugged the speakers in the sound on the speakers is very muffled. I am not sure why it does this. It almost seems like the base is not coming on. Also another thing is that the speaker is 6 Ohms and the receiver recommends 8-16 Ohms. Not sure if this is what is causing the issue. If someone can help i would appreciate it.
Regards

I don't believe it is the speaker impedence. It actually sounds like a defective unit, but you need to be sure you have it wired properly. Make sure the positive terminal on each speaker is connected to the appropriate positive terminal on the receiver (it must be in "phase").

If they are properly connected, have you tried the tuner? If the volume of all sources (DVD, CD, tuner, etc.) is too low, then you probably have a bad unit and need to have it replaced. However, if the tuner sounds OK, then we need to look at your other source units.

Good luck.
