I am building a cabinet for my home theater system and was just wondering, is it true subwoofers have to be on the floor or can they be put into a cabinet?

A cabinet will change the sound of all types of speakers but many people do it and seem to enjoy the results. A front firing sub through a acoustically transparent material is your best bet.

What else is in the cabinet that would enjoy being shaken to bits?

This is for WAF, right? 'Get that ugly thing out of sight!'
'Sub in a box' is not a good idea. What Nuck said.

The best place for the sub will be where it sounds best and integrates properly with the rest of the system.
