Hooking up PC Speakers to TV

I'm trying to connect PC speakers to my Sharp Aquos. I bought a 3.5 mm Mini-Stereo Female to Two RCA Male Speaker Adaptor. I plugged the two male ends into the Audio Output jacks in the back of the TV and the female end to the speaker plug. I adjusted the audio settings on the TV to make the sound come out of the speakers, but it's coming out only faintly, and I have the volume turned all the way up. Is there a step I skipped, a component I need to purchase, a setting I need to adjust?

.

Are the speakers self powered or do they require and amplifier?

It would be unusual for speakers to have a male plug attached. Are you sure you have the system connected properly?

Self-powered, I believe. Here's the user's manual: http://manuals.harman.com/HK/HOM/Owner's%20Manual/HK695%20OM.pdf. The model I have doesn't have a green and a black connector coming out of it, just a black one.
