Maybe not the right place but I had to tell someone on the forum.
On Sept. 8th I got notified by a local radio station that I had won a contest that I'd entered on their website. It's JazzFM 91.1 in Toronto and I believe they are the biggest ALL jazz radio station in Canada. Well what I one was an opportunity for myself and my wife to head down on Sept.9th to a live-to-air appearance of Harry Connick Jr. Interrestingly enough, I just recently listened to one of his albums. Anyways it was a very small intimate venue, with only 70 people and I was in the front row about 8ft from the interview. He's a very interesting and talented musician and extremely down to earth and natural plus a really funny guy which sometimes comes across in the movies he's in. He played a couple tunes on the piano to boot. He's got his new CD coming out this month. Anyways, a lovely hour we had and my wife and I got a group photo with him as well. It will be up on the station soon.
I mentioned before that for his albums he writes, arranges, conducts, produces and sings. He was born in New Orleans and has been playing the piano from 3yrs old. Memorable time indeed. Happy listening tonight Art and company.

P.S. he sang the opening anthem at the football game the other day.

Beatles Remasters. I was never big into the Beatles until now. I finally gave the albums a go, song by song, and found a ton of songs I've grown to love. White Album and Rubber Soul especially.

Hard for me to even name my favorite Beatles album, though Rubber Soul and Abbey Road are currently right up there. But it always changes.

Some favorite songs
In My Life
Getting Better
Penny Lane
Here Comes the Sun
I Want You
Doctor Robert
All My Loving

(I could go on.....)

I haven't picked up the remasters, not sure if I will, but most of what I've read has been quite positive.

Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky

I once was a huge Knopfler fan - even had a great chat with the man years ago, but methinks Mr Knopfler has forgotten how to play guitar. His folksy style on this cd does nothing for me. The was a track or two that attempted a bit of blues and rock and failed miserably as far as I'm concerned. Get back to what you do best Mark and that's play guitar - gone are the great riffs this man was noted for. Oh yeah, and try someone else for writing lyrics Mr Knopfler - they're getting cheesier as you get older.

That's my opinion

M -2.0
S - 4.0

The Beatles Remastered Collection - stereo (with the inclusion of the Love DVD-A/CD and the exception of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack)

M - 5.0
S - 5.0

High score for nostalgia and a remastering process that maintained the integrity of the original recordings. A lot of fun.

Anyone heard the mono Beatle recordings that were just released?

I heard that all the early Beatle recordings were done in mono, and it was the engineers that mixed it in stereo.

Just wondering... why on earth would anyone want to listen to anything in mono anyway? Not being a smart@ss here, I just don't get it.

I could understand if one had a mono system :-)

But most of us now have at least two speakers don't we?

The stereo recordings of the Beatles records at the time had a ton of panning (popular at the time). Some people find it annoying. I've never been a huge fan of mono recordings.

Why not mono recordings? That is how the original artists and crew recoeded them, that is what was played on the radio (with 1 or 2 speakers).
I am not a fan or colourized films either, so there ya go.
Some of the Beatles recordings were also in 'super' or 'expanded' mono, which lends a breadth to the sound, if not creating the stage and depth that we expect now.
Mono recordings can have clarity and accuracy that early stereo lacks, producing a wider front loaded sound, IMO.
If you are to listen to these recordings in a kit with FRSD speakers (which I sure will), then the point might become more obvious, I suppose.

A lot of the earlier recordings in this stereo remaster release, and I assume the same went for previous stereo copies of the originals, the vocals and maybe one or two instruments come from the right channel and the rest from the left. There is no focal point or centre imaging as in the later recordings. Nevertheless, from my memory in my youth when we/I and most people I knew had only mono players, the sound to me now is still much more preferable than mono, even if it ain't great stereo.

So okay, with those Freakin Really Small Diameter speakers, maybe the point will become more obvious.

Just kidding Nuck my friend, just kidding.

Honest.

Now you can tell us what FRSD speakers are maybe?

I knew it was something like that, just couldn't quite get the acronym. Anyway, I'm sure you'll enjoy the sets either way. My only complaint is the sleeve pockets for the discs - hard to get them out without fingering the silver side.

Yeah George, I like her quite a lot - It's been a while since I listened to her - don't ask me why - but the when I did play her recently I really noticed how nice the sq is - as well as the music. I know some of her recordings are released on different labels whether or not that makes a difference I don't know.

There's something new and exciting appearing on our audio rack soon - probably a week or so - more when it happens :-)

Wow, just back from Alaska (again) and have to catch up. Lots to read and listen to.

First up, Art from one of your recent posts:

John Coltrane - Blue Train

John Coltrane - Soultrane

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

The Beatles - Let it Be

How do you like the 'Trane recordings? Both have been on my wish list for awhile now.

Secondly, are those Beatles the new masters or the older ones (like I have)? The new masters seem to be getting good SQ reviews.

M.R., you beat me to the post on "Get Lucky" by Knopfler. I had it preordered and I'm listening to the virgin spin right now, so cannot comment except to say I hope I don't share your opinion--LOL. More shortly......

George, sounds like a cool evening you and your wife had with Mr. Connick. I don't have any of his recordings, but have liked his renditions of standards for some time (hmmm, that does not make sense--maybe time for a purchase). Oh, and I did not miss the posts of pics above. How 'bout dem Canadian gals? Yeah, I read Playboy for the articles too. LOL.

Anyway, fabulous time but always good to be back, and in touch with my favorite forum. Good listening all.}

Welcome back Neil - my parents went to Alaska on a cruise last year and loved it. My wife hates the cold and will never, never go for it. Neil - the SQ on the Harry Connick Jr. CD's is quite good. I'd recommend trying out his new release. He seems to be getting better with each album.

Eclectic, melodic, sometimes abrasive.... Mike Patton's vocal range is impressive from death metal growls, to baritone, to soprano/falsetto, all in the same verse. Crazy stuff.

GNR - Appetite for Destruction
vinyl

At the levels my amps are going up to w/o distortion I am beginning to understand that the destruction is my hearing. I am convinced that with the improved room treatments and getting the 2nd MAC restored I am now louder with the 2 MC-240s (tubes) than I was with the 7300 (SS). Did I mention that they are tube amps? Whew, can they rock.

This LP is as close to heavy metal shredding that I care to get to. It is loud, bodacious, and on Attack! My ears will need a day or two to recover. This is definitely one I recommend for the dashboard CD on any cross country road trips, so long as you had a really good radar detector.
