Hi, has anyone any experience with a Totem Lightening sub and if so, any and all feedback would be appreciated. What would a used one be worth? Are they quality units?

thanks,

John

hi John. Are you looking for a sub to go with the DQ10's?
The lightning was a very good and quick sub, as I recall, but not a bottom dweller for movies.

Nuck, thanks for the response. I have my DQ 10's married to a surround system, with Totem Hawks as surrounds and the Totem Model 1 Signature center, driven by an Anthem A5 amp. I spend the majority of my time listening to music. So, to answer your question, yes, a sub to go with my DQ10's, but also with my surround setup.

Any advice appreciated.

thanks,

John

If you have enough space for all those Totems, John, then the Lightning is probably a little small for the space.
Have you looked at Hsu or SVS for subs?
Have you ever heard of Epik subs?

Nuck, my room is 12'w x 20' long and 8' high.

No, I have no idea about subs. Initially, I was turned off by them; but, I understand they're better now.

So, really I have no idea.

Look into those 3 brands, John, see what you think
Going loud and deep isn't so hard, the musical qualities are subject to interpretation.

Nuck, thanks for the three recommendations, but each manufacturer has several models. How do I go about making such a choice in the dark, without auditioning? What should the criteria be? Do I go on specs, alone?

And reputation, John.
I only vouch for the Hsu units sounding good and doing what they are supposed to do, from experience.
Their STF2 sub is an all around performer.

Nuck, what do you think of the VTF-1?

I'm sent you an e-mail, by the way!

The VTF-1 is smaller but same quality. Outlaw sells these as the LFM1(?)

John, have you tried a movie with just the DQ10's and pcm stereo?
Those speakers in that room might be just as good (or better?) than 5.1

Plus the sub, of course, offering a lot more placement possibilities with only the 2 speakers...

Nuck, there isn't a lot of room for moving the DQ 10's around; the room is actually too small for them, even on their own.

To answer your question: no, I haven't tried it.

I prefer my old two channel setup. I have also a two channel, tube pre that I sometimes use to listen only in two channel mode. However, the Anthem under powers, if you can believe that, the DQ 10's. The ideal amp was thought to be a 500 watt rms Hafler, followed by the Bryston 4b. The DQ 10's are extremely ineficient.

I have toyed with the idea of selling off all the surround equipment.

Pull the surrounds out of the room, John, and try the DQ's alone for dialogue.
You might be very surprised at how well they handle dialogue.

Nuck, I know the DQ 10's handle dialogue well as I have the center mixed into them; in fact, they're better at it than the center.

At this point, I'm going to try to just tweak what I have, unless George wants my Hawks! lol

John, it may be time to simplify...again.
