these ADS L-710 speakers worked fine in 1980's and have been boxed a long time. now both 4 0hm speakers (played through yamaha rx-770 75 wpc) have equally very fluttery bass response. am wondering if anyone has explanation or suggestions?
thanks a lot.

Hi John,

Can't be certain with just that brief description but typically all materials breakdown with time. Sounds like the surrounds on the cones have probably started to get weak and loose and therefore, the tightness has been lost. Do they have foam or rubber surrounds, some used cheap vinyl, as well. If foam or vinyl it probably has lost some of its original rigidity. Rubber would last much longer. The other thing is tha the crossover's themselves may have deteriorated but this is less likely.

George,
thank you for your thoughts and reply.
i am feeling pretty dumb! had never taken the covers off to examine! the foam surrounds as you call them of each speaker's 2 mid/bass speakers have literally disintegrated into crumbs and pieces!! no wonder they sound the way they do!!!

any idea if they are repairable at reasonable cost? recommendations where?

thank so much for your help.

I am pretty sure you can get them refoamed. Who can do it, I'm not acquainted with any companies? Is it resonable...I've heard it is. Where abouts are you located? I think some of the guys might be able to direct you to some possible companies. Alternatively, you could shop PartsSource.com for a total replacement set of woofers.

These were just some random links related to the subject that I pulled up with a Google search using "ads speaker foam surround kits"...a variation on that will yield even more results. This should give you somewhere to start.
