I wanted to get the input of the "speaker guys" on what your top 5 favourite albums are on CD and/or vinyl (specify). I'm looking to build my Jazz collection primarily and wanted to get some direction. I like the contemporary, duo, trio, quartet etc. not so much big band. Share your thoughts here.
This thread goes hand in hand with Art's music for the speaker guys thread but I'd like to keep this to favorites. Thanks.

Reference and favorite may not be related as recording quality and music quality may be different.

That said I can't select 5 favorites...not possible.

BTW I suggested the Speaker Guys thread and Gavin executed it...go Gav.

Certainly some are more salient that others and if that's kind of what you mean I'd be happy to share those as we go along posting what we're listening to. Let us know...

I would have to say that the two albums by sophie millman are fantastic. I listen to both of them on a regular basis. I also enjoy eliane elias. Fantastic jazz piano, with great vocals

Favorite CD's of all time? Wholly crap, I couldn't even begin to put them in order.

Ok...a lot of my music I listen to is all over the map. But favorite cd's...

Dave- I have that Clash album, its well produced as well. Love it.

Tool-Aenima/Undertoe (its a close one)
Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Metallica-And Justice For All
In Flames - Reroute To Remain

I would put Machine Head up there, as well as Slayer. Seen Slayer live with System of a Down in High School. Lost a shoe, ripped my shirt almost clean off, and almost got crushed. One of the best times of my life.lol

I really like Jack Johnson, Diana Krawl and some nice Classical music to keep in touch with my sensitive side.lol. Plus it sounds really good. Most metal/hard rock sounds like crap.

Dave- You pumped up about Metallica's new album tomorrow? boooooooo yeahhh. Hear the new song tonight, sounds like their stuff from the Black Album.

The new album is awe-inspiring. It's one of the ones where the first time you listen to it you think "hmmmm, that's not bad". Then you listen to it a few more times, and there's a few songs you play over and over again. Then, after more listens even the songs that didn't impress you start to grow on you.

I downloaded a really distorted, crappy rip of the album a couple of days ago. I have it on my server at home, my mp3 player, a CD in my car and on my HD at work. It's really that good.

I'll be picking up the CD tomorrow. Apparently the production is just amazing. Rick Rubin turns to gold everything he touches.

Mike - thanks for the point to the other thread, good stuff there.
Art and Gavin - some good suggestions, I'll definitely look into.
Dave and Nick - I like the different slant. I've never gone towards alternative and punk but not into hard rock or metal - but now I no the should have's it might be worth a try.
I like where this is going.
Anyone into Metric - some some of their stuff on 180 gram and was considering.
It's hard to keep it to five, but a few of my favorites would be:
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms and
Roxy Music - Avalon
Diana Krall - The Look of Love
Police - Zenyatta Mondatta

I still need to think some more - for the most part, I'm still caught in the 80's.

toe -- The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety

The Band - The Band

Contemporary Noise Quintet -- Pig Inside the Gentleman

Battles - Mirrored

Xploding Plastix -- Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents

Contemporary is a nu-jazz kind of deal. Frantic ADD type jazz but very groove oriented.

Xploding has aspects of jazz but it's electronic at heart.

toe has some pretty stunning jazz influenced drumming in a post-rock styled band.

The Band is a Canadian thing. Levon Helm was in it. I've seen Dirt Farmer mentioned here by Art (I think).

Battles is pretty intense.

Hey Marc good to see you again. Stick around.

Dave- Yup go it up and running with a new cartridge and such. More tinkering to do with the setup. Don't know if I will ever get it to sound as good as the Apollo. Time will tell. Metallica today. oh yes!!

George- I have the Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms and Diana Krall - The Look of Love albums. Love them both. Diana Krall...I mean really is there any better in production than her? If so, I havnt heard it yet.

If you are in the mood for something quirky... I also like the "ny ska jazz ensemble". I can't listen to them all the time, and it is very repetitive. But, if you like ska and jazz, it can be a fun listen.

George, you should get to work on that ASAP. May I suggest:

Beggars Banquet
Through the Past Darkly (a nice compilation of what I'll call The Stones "Late Invasion/Early Psyedelic" period, including "Jumpin Jack Flash")
Exile on Main Street
It's Only Rock & Roll

Together with the aforementioned albums, these represent the bands grestest work, IMHO.

Some good Jazz selections:

Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train (24-bit remastered CD from the original 1960 tapes or 180gm reissued vinyl still available, reasonably good sound, bl00dy excellent music)

Chris Botti - First Wish (Sting's trumpeter, 2001 ? Well recorded, lots of electronics, big sound, CD)

Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard (180gm vinyl reissue, fabulous)

Monty Alexander Trio - Montreux Alexander (180gm vinyl reissue, fantastic pyrotechnics in this live set, brilliantly recorded, excellent music)

Stan Getz - The Dolphin (hmmm, original American vinyl pressing and 180gm reissue - the original is better, many consider this to be one of his best moments ever)

Carol Kidd - Nice Work (vinyl, also available on CD and through Linn's download store I think, brilliant band behind one of the best UK jazz vocalists, uplifting and engaging)

Martin Taylor - Artistry (vinyl, but also available as Linn download, solo acoustic guitar, brilliant late night after dinner jazz)

David Newton - Victim of Circumstance (Vinyl, late night jazz, beautiful recording)

Antonio Forcione - Live! (CD, very good recording with lovely music on)

Antonio Forcione - Touch Wood (CD, 4 excellent players with lovely music by Forcione)

Count Basie - Basie Jam (vinyl on Pablo, my favourite Basie, good enough recording to allow through the performance)

Those would be my main Jazz recommendations...I think.

Sorry, but call it Rock, call it blues, call it Psychaedilia but Led Zeppelin is never ever Jazz.

Frank - great list, lot's to consider.

Nick - my intro. post did steer this towards the Jazz flavour as that's what I've been pursuing of late but other top 5 lists are more than welcome. It's all music.

The best sounding hard rock album I have ever heard is Here Comes Trouble by Bad Company. Seems like the early 90s was the best time for good sounding rock albums. After that they started mixing everything really loud and now it sounds like garbage. It's too bad.

Hi Paul,

I've been conidering getting Miles Davis - Birth of Cool. It's that good eh, worth the $16 for the CD. I have Kind of Blue and love it - so many classic tracks.
Of the ones you name, which would your picks be from a sonic performance perspective? And is it CD or Vinyl?

Hi Man
I would add artists I don't have before I would get too many of the same performer...but for Miles
http://www.amazon.com/Birth-Cool-Miles-Davis/dp/B00005614M

So after Clemson finishes playing on TV, I'll bore you with a few more jazz..

Any collection, jazz or not, must have a few Beatles cds, though!!!!!!

I have up vinyl years ago. Marriage will do that to you!!!

The Digital Duke sonically is the best, from my very short list, but then its not Duke Ellington, it's Mercer Ellington with the then (80s) Duke Ellington band, but that one might be an exception. I also like Basie Meets Ellington for both on one CD.

http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/7610392/a/First+Time:+Count+Meets+ The+Duke.htm

I'd rather hear Sinatra than Buble or Ella or Sarah V than Nora Jones so I don't have more than one or two of Jones, for example.

I'm more into the performer than the actual sound quality (within certain parameters)....usually remastered from orginial master tracks converts into a nice recording, depending on the label. Most of the classic jazz recordings have been re released with improved sound anyway. Anybody new should have great sound....

I'm up to about 35000 songs now, so I'm more into completing the catalog for performers...but there are the 50 or so jazz recordings that are must haves...

This guy's list is very good for me. You can easily enjoy these releases without auditioning.

Thanks Paul. I will look into. I like some of the 24-bit remasters. They seem to be pretty detailed but I'm still playing them on a much less than desireable DVD recorder/player.

Keep them coming if you think of anyting else.
