Great, great CD. Probably my favorite by these guys.

Want to expand my Keith Jarrett collection (which isn't hard since I only have one). Suggestions?

Tweaked the CD player, so all I have played since Sunday is CDs.

Tonight it is;

White Stripes - Elephant
White Stripes - Icky Thump
Green Day - american idiot
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open

These are all a good test to measure your kit!

Earlier this week;

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Elvis, Willie, Diana Krall, Dead Can Dance, Roger Waters, Feist, and Tool.

Pulling out all the reference gear which means I am in "hifi" listening mode until this all soaks in. Then it will be back to listening to music again.

Jon Hassel- Fascinoma w/Ry Cooder dreamy space music that my wife said feels sad.

I don't know Evolution but I love Anne Drummond's work on the fabulous Kenny Barron disc: Canta Brazil.

Keith Jarrett? I will have to think about that. You have to decide if you want solo or the great trio. Now playing: Bye Bye Blackbird.

I have been reading all the "Best of 2007" lists. Interesting to see which critics have my taste. Certain albums made many lists, but many albums got just one or two votes. One that got best votes and that I have been playing a lot is Tierney Sutton- On the Other Side.
More on the "best" later.

Vinyl- Well my albums are still shelved completely randomly after returning from 16 yrs in storage. So I don't look for music, just play randomly:

Jimmie Rawles- Paws that Refresh w/Buster Williams 1976

Oscar Peterson/Milt Jackson- Two of the Few, Pablo 1983

Oscar Peterson/Stephan Grapelli- Time after Time 1981 w/NHOP....

Susannah McCorkle- How Do You Keep the Music Playing? 1985 w/Al Cohn, Gene Bertoncini......

Duke Jordan Quartet- Dukes Artistry 1978 w/ Art Farmer, David Rriesen, Philly Joe

Chet Baker- Peace, 1982 w/ David Friedman, Buster Williams, Joe Chambers

Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges plus others- Side by Side a Japanese issue Verve

Earl Hines w/Teresa Brewe- We Love You Fats 1978

Duke Robillard- Swing 1986 w/Scott Hamilton, Mike LeDonne etc. Pretty mellow blues lp.

Gatemouth Brown- More Stuff a French LP from 1973 w/Jay McShann, Al Grey and more...

Stephan Grappelli and his American All Stars 1978 a great quintet w/Rolland Hanna, Bucky Pizzarelli...

Frank Wess- Flute Juice 1981 great quintet w/ Tommy Flannagan, Geo Mraz....

I will never in my lifetime ever get through this pile of LPs, let alone 'burn' any!

Yo- I just found some Zappa, that will be a change!

"...Are you familiar with this concept called sleep?..."

LOL. My wife works graveyard shift, 12:30 am to 9 am!
Ironically, I am the night owl of the family, always have been.

I am 'semi retired'. That is, I work construction in the summer and in winter I do a little heating work at my leisure, that is after noon and evenings!

It is always a big shock when the first "real" job of the summer starts!

Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane in 1957 playing Ruby my Dear.
Man, they were so far ahead of their time! I guess that is what "timeless music" means.

Don't always post right away...and sometimes I do...I do keep them chronological as I play them...I also post the play list on another site. Just kind of fun to share what you are listening to. I'm not a nibbler or sampler (unless I'm listening to a free sampler or the radio). I don't think most albums were intended by the artist to be listened to that way. That would be like looking exclusively at one corner of a painting and not seeing the rest. You may like what you see but you aren't viewing the big/whole picture.

Good analogy Art.

I am about 80% / 20%. If it is new to me, something I had not heard and picked off of a recommendation I am about 98% / 2%. The 2% is where I can not listen to the whole album CD and will not listen to it again. The 20% is if I bought something for a particular cut or am short on time.

Besides, it gets tedious to skip songs on an LP.

Joe Lovano and Hank Jones- Kids...

That album got some 'best of the year' votes in the polls, and I tried to buy it this week but could only find this one by them:
Joyous Encounter.
I really like it. But then, I like every Hank Jones album I ever heard. This is a great band.

Charlie Haden- Nocturn
Some very nice Joe Lavano playing here too. Gonzalo Rubalcaba on piano.
This ranks as one of the most beautiful albums ever! Definately on my list of essential discs.

Just pre-ordered Metallica's Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning on 45 RPM 180 gm vinyl. Re-mastered at half speed by MoFi. Should be very interesting. Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice For All are due out in June according to the band on their website.

Still waiting for Led Zeppelin's Mothership on vinyl. Its release has been pushed back again, this time to April 1st. It was originally supposed to be released in November.

Still haven't sat down and listened to BB King's Live At Cook County Jail. Basketball season travelling is killing me.

The RH Factor- Hard Groove
Stalking you! he he

Art: "...and Mr Haden has been involved in some lovely music making over the last decade or two..."
I especially like the quiet duets with Hank Jones- Steal Away
and w/ Metheney- Beyond the Missouri Sky
and Land of the Sun- A sequel to Nocturne w/Ganzalo Rubaclaba, Joe Lavano etc.

Herbie Mann/Phil Woods - Beyond Brooklyn
I need that! Have some of both guys hidden in the vinyl. Been hearing older Herbie come up on FM which I play when too lazy to do my own music.

Saw Amad Jamal once in Seattle at the old Jazz Alley. Good show. He had a Jamacan steel drum player Othello, best recorded on Monte Alexanders' "Ivory and Steel" album.

Weather Report -- Black Market
Now that should be a reference for electric bass lovers!!!

To repeat old post but:

Kevin, "Nocturne" is very good. Who plays guitar on Noche de Ronda? "Land of the Sun" is next--both on my super fantastic H-K computer speakers (ugh). The recording quality sounds very good, to the extent I can tell.

Pat Metheney!
Joe Lavano is the Sax except on #6 and 10 which is David Sanchez.

Metheney has done some memorable cameos. One of my favorite is on Abbey Lincoln- A Turtle's Dream
I mention that because it is in the same class of beautiful, what I call "night music".

OK, both "Nocturne" and "Land of the Sun" are excellent. I found "Land of the Sun" a little livelier and more engaging. "Nocturne" struck me like three guys set up in your living room and start playing--really nice. Can't wait to hear those on the kit.

Art, I'm going to give "Beyond Brooklyn" a preview tomorrow.

Thanks for some great suggestions.
