I wish Phoenix had a couple of decent radio stations. The air waves are pretty barren here unless your day is from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.

I think I may have to move this Sade recording over to the reference list. Her voice is absolutely magical on this CD, and very well balanced with the instruments--an extremely well engineered recording. I feel the wish list growing.

Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland followed by a really fun show Radio Deluxe with John Pizarelli and Jessica Molaskey.

Both shows have different guests every week. Standout shows have seen Tierney Sutton on both shows and Kurt Elling on Radio Deluxe...many great guests and good times.

Wilco- Sky Blue Sky
Thanks for the recommendation!

Now playing on the Apollo:
Jimmy Bruno live at Birdland II, half with Scott Hamilton.

Tested the Apollo first with one of last years best:
Metheny-Meldau Quartet
Scofield- This Meets That
Bettye LaVette- The Scene of the Crime.
Lovano- Joyous Encounter w/Hank Jones
Brecker- Pilgrimage
Metheney- Day Trip

Neil- Art plays much of the same albums as me.
Now you and I are hitting a lot of the same ones lately:
Sting- Ten Summoner's Tales
Notting Hillbillies
Beyond the Missouri Sky
Sade
Robert Cray
Mark Knopfler -- The Ragpicker's Dream

Are you a Dr John fan yet??

Mike,

Does your vinyl copy of Undertow have a lot of static-like pops in the begining and end of each side before the music starts? I was wondering if mine is a bad pressing or if this is something Tool did intentionally? They go away once the music starts.

Stu,

I am so glad you brought that up. I was beginning to wonder how many times I had to clean a new album. I was beginning to think it may have been re-sealed.

Yes, mine is the same as yours.

I also get a lot of "pops" on side "d" along with the crickets in the later half of that cut.

"Yes, mine is the same as yours."

Sound effects added by the band? I haven't thought about this in years, but James Gang's Rides Again (1970)album had a little secret. People with record changers didn't know this as the very inner groove on side one you could hear Joe saying:

turn me over
turn me over
turn me over

inner groove side two:

play me again
play me again
play me again

Good to see you again.

Sharp, intuitive and very precise. I liked the cd better, myself.

Mike,

Tool has been known to do odd inexplicable things.

The Lateralus album has more pops and clicks than the Undertow album. They also changed the song order a little bit on the vinyl version of Lateralus.

The Opiate album will play one of two different songs at the end of the album depending on which groove the needle ends up on.

I'm pretty sure they did something different on their Aenima album, but I don't have it. It typically goes for a couple hundred dollars on eBay.

Any word on if and when they'll release 10,000 Days on vinyl?

to be honest with you, I have not been able to listen to it from start to finish yet. the production is incredible (mastered on ProAc monitors according to the notes, and a good ear)... but the material is different than what I expected from her.

This isn't to say that the CD is bad, just not Lizz. To be honest, I could have pictured Wynonna Judd singing more so than Lizz if that gives you any idea of some of the material. Some of the songs have a funky, urban bluesy feel to them.

I really do believe the disc will grow on me, it is just not what I expected.

?Roy Hargrove - Nothing Serious? I almost bought that a couple days ago.

Finishing a week long Blue Note classics jag with:
Bobby Hutcherson 4 tet- Happenings w/ Herbie Hancock and...

Joe Henderson- In 'n Out w/Henderson, McCoy Tyner and...

Cannonball Adderley- Something Blue w/ Miles Davis, Hank Jones and...

Getting into some mellow night time jazz:
Hank Jones duets w/ Charlie Haden- Steal Away

Metheney duets w/ Haden- Missouri Sky

Metheney trio w/ Jaco Pastorius, Bob Moses- Bright Size Life, on ECM 1975, Pat's 1st album of his own after a number of great
ones with Gary Burton, for example:

Passengers- Gary Burton w/Metheney and....

Like Minds- Gary Burton w/ Metheney, Chic Corea, Roy Haynes, Dave Holland- (WOW!)

Metheney trio w/ McBride- Day Trip (the new album)

Chic Corea w/ Roy Haynes, McBride + Remembering Bud Powell

Chic Corea duets w/ Gary Burton Chrystal Silence

Gary Burton duets w/ Ralf Towner- Matchbook

Joe Lavano 4tet w/ Hank Jones Joyous Encounter

Roy Haynes w/ Roland Kirk and Tommy Flannagan and...

Jimmy Bruno Trio Live at Birdland II, half w/ Scott Hamilton

Liz Wright- Dreaming Wide Awake

Jay McShann- Best of Friends w/ Al Casey

Jay McShann- Still Jumpin The Blues w/ Duke Robillard Band + Maria Mulduar

Herbie Hancock- Possibilities. The cut w/ Santana and Anjalique Kujo should be #1 song!!!

Santana- Supernatural

Pancho Sanchez- Soul Sauce, Memories of Cal Tjader on CJ, 1995,
I was surprised how much my wife enjoyed seeing him this New Year in Seattle.

Flaco Jiminez- Partners
songs w/ Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Steven Stills, Emmy Lou Harris and others.

Bettye Lavette- Scene of the Crime
So fun to discover another very good soul/blues/R&B singer that I am not critical of it. Not sure yet if it will be one I play a lot (just twice so far). One I missed though she has been around a long time. Maybe reminds me of late Etta James blues (not the early romantic ballads)

Wilco- Sky Blue Sky

Stu, I was looking around and find the same question being asked for the past couple of years regarding 10,000 Days. No answer yet.

Aenima is not in the league with Amused to Death IMO so if that is the price, so be it, I will do without.

Looking for Don Pullen w/ George Adam- "Sing me a Song Everlasting" I got interested because I keep playing Mingus Changes I and II where they help form one of my favorite Mingus bands ever.
Once I made the mistake of looking at the Mosiac catalog the list wants to grow. McCoy Tyner looks good. I heard a cut on the fm.
SO MANY!!
I wondered about the quality of Mosiac. I assume from the reputation that it is all good.

The Lizz Wright album is very good and I'll have to listen to it a few times before I determine where it lies in the pecking order. So far I'd say that I like the other 2 a bit better.

That Shelby Lynne album is outstanding in every way. A fully mature artist having her way with some great songs...excellent.

The Sarah Lee and Johnny album as well as the Lauren Ellis albums I picked up for $1 each at Borders on clearance. Both very good and the Lauren Ellis is particularly good.

Today's star and most unforgettable performance belongs to Shelby.

Makes you wonder why they have any left when you get there! Lucky!!

"..... Lauren is her superior...."
Wow. I will pick one up asap.

I have been testing out some wires. I have always used the free wires but today got a pair of Audioquest King Cobras. I don't know, sounds so good, but I just got the Apollo a few days ago so I can't really say how much better.
So the reference disc now is

Gary Burton- For Hamp, Red, Bags and Cal.
Some great guys on it: Christian McBride, John Pattatucci, Mulgrew Miller, Danilo Perez, Russel Malone etc.
