A good friend stopped by the house yesterday afternoon.

Oodles of lp's were spun. Cd's were flyin'. Beers were slidin'. Knob creek was rolling.

And with him he brought a second copy of an lp. Absolutely immaculate copy of Joe's Garage was given to me. How can I ever repay him?

Damnit this thing beats the cd's tenfold.

Oh, and he's an Onkyo/Cerwin Vega owner. Now, I know my gear ain't the greatest but I think I saw his jaw hit the floor a coupla times yesterday. Gotta love it.

Thanks again to all the forum members that held my hand and led me down the proper path!

Folks - these are all wonderful recommendations and I'm interested in all of them!

However, maybe it's just me, but IMHO it would be doubly helpful if you had time to include a sentence or two about the music you're recommending and WHY it's a good-sounding 'reference' recording to show-off or test a hi-fi system.

Otherwise I just don't know where to start!

Cheers James:
Well this is not the thread where good sounding reference recordings are being posted.
This is the "what you are listening to" thread.

I personally do like to comment, and read others comments, but I enjoy the simple listings too.

Here is the thread you want:
"Your Reference Library" https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/374513.html

It has fallen down but will get bumped back up soon enough.

Because it was a festive day, I started with Carnival in Brazil.
A favorite, Daniela Mercury kicked it off.

As the beverages flowed we ended up playing a bunch of Santana while my wife taught her friend how to make apple pie.

Yyou can't beat a day like that!

We went into Pancho Sanches because the wife was telling how much she enjoyed his live show in Seattle last month.

I am laying back alone now to Abbey sings Abbey.

Mike -
I haven't had a chance to spin it yet. I've been on the road. When I've been home I've had erratic hours - 6AM-4PM 3 days in a row, followed by Noon - 9PM the last two days. My sleep schedule is so thrown off right now, I fell asleep a couple of time at the computer at work. Luckily the boss wan't around.

I'll try to spin it tomorrow. The jackets healed a little bit. The LPs aren't warped or cracked, so I'm hoping it'll all be fine.

Stryvn -
I'm a big fan of the perverbial jaw dropping. I've witnessed this with several friends and family members. My sister-in-law's boyfriend was visiting when I picked up my Bryston. We spun some Sabbath and Steppenwolf on vinyl and CD. After a few minutes he was all about getting a new stereo, but it never happened.

I may have mentioned that I became a fan of Terrence when I saw him with Art Blakely in a bar in Seattle.

Jon Faddis of course from Mingus.
I played Mingus Changes about 5 times this week. That is the band with Jack Walrath on trumpet. He was superb as are the rest of the players in this classic masterpiece.

While tenor sax is my horn of choice,
Sometimes I go on a trumpet kick.
Roy Hargrove (saw him at the Mt Hood Jazz Fest)
Miles Davis
Chet Baker (w/no singing)
Dave Douglas
Satch
Clark Terry (saw him once too)
Red Rodney
Clifford Brown
Fats Navarro
Sandaval
Roditi
Art Farmer
Jay Thomas in Seattle doubles on both Trumpet and Sax.
Nicholas Payton (also saw him at Mt Hood Fest)
Ruby Braff, one of the best, most fun shows I ever saw with Scott Hamilton, John Bunch, Oliver Jackson. Love that Concord Jazz. Howard Alden, Bucky Pizzarelli, Scott H. etc!

stryvn- Speaking of concerts, Steve Miller put on one of the best parties I have ever seen in my life, in a huge bar on the river in Portland.

The revelers were up on the tables chugging and spilling beer while Steve ran around with a cordless electric guitar. That guy sure knows how to instigate a crowd.

Late on we were sitting on chairs toward the back, the floor flooded with beer when a guy came dancing toward us with a pitcher of beer. He went down on his back, the pitcher smashing, hurling beer and glass ahead. He slid on past us on his back like a white water rafter. My buddy didn't even flinch, just calmly said: "better cut that guy off".

Blood on the Tracks was my favorite Dylan album.

It was Mardi Gras so we got in the spirit with Dr.John, Professor Longhair etc.
and Carnival in Rio. Brazil? Well, ok, start with Daniela Mercury- Feijao Comaroz.
They know how to party: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xnzZ67dg6k

Charles Lloyd- The Water is Wide, ECM 1999 with Brad Mehldau, Abercrombe, Grenadier and Billy Higgins on drums.
I believe this was his 2d album with Higgins and his 1st w/ Mehldau. They work so well together. I like Abercrombe too. Higgins was a special treat on this.
I am already a big Meldau fan. Esp his 2 albums last year with Pat Metheney. He is great on this one too.
I saw him sit in for Billy Childs in the Diane Reeves Orchestra. Brilliant to get picked up for such a complex job with only a couple hours notice. Amazing.

Another super group today: Michael Brecker, Nearness of You, The Ballad Book. I think the lineup says it all: Pat Metheney, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJonette. Wow! on Verve 2001. And two songs with James Taylor.

And another dream team: Chet Baker: Chet, OJC w/Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay, Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams.

Tierney Sutton- I'm with the Band
Babel- Momento
Chucho Valdez- Out of Sight, with RAY CHARLES! and others.
Christian McBride- Gettin To It. Nice with Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut.

Moloko featuring Roisin Murphy (Euro pop/disco)

I was just on YouTube and searched for Moloko because I liked their song "Sing It Back". Anyway, I ended up watching a couple hours worth of her videos. She is captivating to say the least. Her presence on stage, her voicing, and charms. Try reading some of the comments on the videos.

I especially like the live performances:

Actually trumpet is my instrument of choice...

Saw James Carter a couple of years back at the Mt Hood with his B3 trio, good lord he was hot. The Heath Brothers were there as well as Los Hombres Calientes with Irvin Mayfield and Bill Summers, Donald Harrison was supposed to join them but missed his flight so Marcus Belgrave, who happened to be there, sat in and gave 'em a second trumpet (instead of Harrison's sax), and lastly Madeleine Peyroux with Larry Goldings on keyboards. Took the opportunity to meet them all after the concerts.

I saw Roy Hargrove in Eugene with Directions in Music with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker. They were all fabulous but Michael Brecker's performance will always stand out to me.

Nicholas Payton's band missed their flight when I saw him so local Portland musicians sat in with him along with a legendary performance by an Indiana University freshman on sax named Sophie Faught...lots of fun.

Have tickets to Mehldau this spring.

Surgery schedule moved up to Tuesday the 12th and I tore my MCL....not looking good for The Bad Plus on Thursday the 14th...though I'm still planning to go.

As usual Kevin your music is s reference.

Good luck! Don't let them cut too much off.
James Carter is something live. He was very loose and wild because it was a tribute to Roland Kirk and Turre pushed him to go for it. They said that the 3 horn players would try to do a fraction of Kirk.

I miss the live music now being stuck in Alaska. I used to spend 6 months in America, but the new (2yrs) wife has a job here. Oh well.
I read that there will be a lot of great people going to OR this year.
Being a jazz fan is tough, since we lose so many every year. Brecker, Zawinil, Oscar etc...makes you feel like you have to see them all before it is too late.
I was lucky to see one of my favorite guys, Jay McShann 3 times. He hung with us one time. So cool. He made it to 90!
EVERYONE should have this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kjfixq8jldae with Duke Robillard Band. A blues album.

Another one of his best is, Last of the Blue Devils: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/7281692/a/Last+Of+The+Blue+Devils. htm (w trumpet, sax)
More of a jazz album with Fathead Newman and Phil Woods: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:0nfwxqekldse
Another favorite is with Claude Williams on fiddle.

Art, you still show me some new ones. Today add:
Robert Glasper and Russell Gunn
I went to google and found a list of trumpeters on Wikepedia:

Ummm...I think I'll wait for your visit Kevin...lol!

James Carter Organ Trio - Out of Nowhere with Special Guest Hamiet Bluiett and James "Blood" Ulmer.

Russell Gunn's work varied. He's an excellent trumpeter who either has not figured out what style he's comfortable with or as I prefer to think, has a restless imagination and an artists need to create something different...often.

My favorite of his is the "Moodswings" cd I played earlier, though I really like his "Blue on the DL" and "Plays Miles" cd's as well. I haven't listened to his Ethnomusicology series.

Robert Glasper is new to me and I'm still tryin' to get a read on him.

My favorite Frank Sinatra song is Summer Wind.

The summer wind, came blowin' in from across the sea
It lingered there to touch your hair and walk with me
All summer long we sang a song and then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts and the summer wind

Like painted kites, those days and nights, they went flyin' by
The world was new beneath a blue umbrella sky
Then softer than a piper man one day it called to you
I lost you, I lost you to the summer wind

The autumn wind and the winter winds, they have come and gone
And still the days, those lonely days, they go on and on
And guess who sighs his lullabies through nights that never end
My fickle friend, the summer wind

I was lucky to see Gatemouth twice. Once with the horns ala Gatemouth Swings. Mt Hood Fest again. Another time in a bar in Seattle with a hot small band.
He has a lot of great albums. I especially love this one: http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Makin'%20Music:1921094402 and it was performed live on film on Austin City Limits but I have never seen a DVD of it.

Anyone who still is not convinced that Roy Clark is serious, should hear him with Joe Pass doing Hank Williams.

Another one EVERYONE needs is the one with Professor Longhair!

Sophie Milman - I don't know how I missed her since 2004 when this came out. Only since it was posted here. I like that band. Good Sax player especially and good guitar and piano.
I read that the new album is a different band. Have not heard it yet.

Nina Simone, best of.

Ed- Cool! I love bossa nova. I have a huge Brazil collection.
When I bought my 1st HiFi and stack of albums in 1967 (omg I'm old!) I was not really too hip to what music I wanted but needed music to play on the new gear, so I just went into the store one time and grabbed a pile. So Stan Getz/Jobim/Gilberto classic Girl From Ipenema was one. That started a life long obsession!

I do remember some of the other 1st lps too:
Sgt Pepper- Beattles
Take Five- Dave Brubeck w/Paul Desmond
Aretha Hits
Simon and Garfunkle- Sounds of Silence
Hendrix- Are you Experienced

Soon to add Ray Charles greatest hits
Hendrix-Electric Ladyland
Dylan- Greatest Hits
Doors- Doors
Doors- Strange Days
Cream
Jeff Beck- Truth
Tommy Edwards- All In the Game
Dean Martin- Hits
Elvis

I get all my classical on fm unfortunately. When I am too lazy to play something, I default to the radio. Jazz at night turns to Classical morn.

Heard this on fm today.
Melody for the G String. That is so romantic!
Maybe I'll write lyrics for it.

Dave Douglas- 1000 eves

Steve Nelson w/Mulgrew and
Steve Nelson new one

Puteumayo- Acoustic Brazil (more folk/pop music)
All the Puteumayo Brazil collections are great. Esp Festa Brazil!

Flora Purim- Speak No Evil (this is NOT Bossa Nova, but jazz vocal from Brazil)

Fathead- Davey Blue, Cedar Walton is so good on this. The vibe player, Brian Carrot is unknown but plays well.

Which led me back to THE father of all tough tenors: Coleman Hawkins. Another great Rudy Van Gelder session from '58 under the name Tiny Grimes. A special favorite, Ray Bryant on piano.

Cal Tjader- from 1977

Vinyl-
Grapelli and His American All Stars, recorded in France 1978 on Black and Blue. With Rolland Hanna, Bucky Pizzarelli etc.

Grapelli/Oscar Peterson- Time After Time, in Paris 1973

Oscar Peterson Trio- Eloquence, rec in Denmark 1965

Oscar Peterson- Two of the Few w/Milt Jackson, Pablo 1983

Gary Burton- Times Square, rec 1978 on ECM w/Tiger Okoshi- Trumpet, Roy Haynes!!! and Steve Swallow.

I've missed a few threads here as I've been out. Had my surgery yesterday and have been sicker than heII since. One hour of sleep since Monday, no food since Monday and I could go on...I will be back shortly.

No such thing as routine surgery to the patient, just the physician.

Will try to catch up to a couple of the threads relative to Rega at a later time.

Didn't know where else to post this as it appears to be one of our hang outs...must go.

I love that Jazz list. Highly recommend ALL of them.

Art- Don't let this opportunity slip for malingering!
I have a friend who went back to work in the afternoon after an outpatient proceedure, for which I got 3 days and free service from the wife! On the other hand, that is why he is rich, and I am not.

Squeeze it to the last drop!
