Nothing of too much interest spinning on the player the last few days. However we did fly out to Chicago/Milwaukee area for the weekend to catch Alan Parsons Live Project on Friday and Saturday night. Great time, great shows. Found some really good stout too, how bad can that be??

Sem, you were in my back yard, dude. Did you take any money from the Potowatomi? I've seen a few gigs in the Northern Lights. You were 35 miles from a free meal and some tunes. How was the gig?

Oh man stryvn...if I had known you live in the area I would have spoken up earlier. No money made but very little lost, that's a plus in my books. We had a couple extra tickets that went unused as well as an after-show pass to meet with and party with the band. The show at the Northern Lights was nice, intimate venue that seats around 500 I would guess, great sound. I've seen these guys at several casino shows and this was, bar none, the best sounding of them all. The acoustics Saturday night at the Hemmens Center in Elgin, IL were not nearly as good, even though it's the home of the local symphony...go figure. Next time, stryvn.

I'll bet the Parson's was good there.

Frank Marino just played there last week. I got the impression he would have played until sun-up. Really groovin' (if yer into that sorta thing) when suddenly at 11:00 somebody pulled the plug. Mid-song...no electricity. Gig over. Good night folks.

Got my Mother the Paul Potts CD and The best of Puccini (mixed artists) for her 85th a week or so back. Played them and I think she thought she'd gone to heaven. Helped make her day.

Playing Dr John, Tony Joe White, and Clapton this afternoon.

It's 'groove jazz' (mayhaps, better described as Jazz-Funk-Rock Fusion) all the way for me!

four80east "Round Three" (For all you uninitiated, go take a listen to the track "TKO" on iTunes [gah, iTunes] or whatever your favourite music sampling website is. What a terrific album and a terrific track!)

Down to the Bone "Supercharged"

The only Bob Welch I have is the "Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond" limited edition cd. Kind of a unique cd in that he went back in the studio and re-recorded all the songs on it. A new take on some older classics.

"Kate Bush - Hounds of Love - Smokey Gray Clouded Vinyl commentary; this is a most engaging and enjoyable album, first time I spun it or am aware of hearing this artist."

I have and really like "Hounds of Love" and "Lionheart" and back in July I picked up her latest, "Aerial," which I have yet to open and listen to it. Just waiting for the right time to give her my full attention I guess. I've heard her referred to as the female Floyd, although I don't quite see that connection. All good stuff though.

Sem, it is my understanding that she was discovered by either Gilmore or Waters. One of them helped set up her first recording.

I heard some of the same effects on "Hounds Of Love" that I have heard on "Relics" (Floyd) and "Amused To Death" (Waters).

One or both of those reasons may be why she has tagged the female Floyd. How sweet would that have been had she become a member of Floyd?

I appreciate your posting her other recordings which I will certainly seek out.

Regards,

Mike

MW, thanks, I didn't realize that a Floyd member helped to discover her. I do have a vinyl copy of "The Secret Policeman's Third Ball" which has a very cool version of the song "Running Up the Hill" sung by Bush, with both Gilmour and Mason playing on it. Makes more sense now.

Last night I spun 10,000 Days by Tool on the Apollo. Its the first time I heard it on the new system and didn't get distracted - Mrs. Stu was visiting family.

Mike Wodek has commented on the production in the past, and more specifically the layering.

HOLY SH*T!

In the song Wings for Marie (10,000 Days Part II) there's a thunderstorm in the background - sort of. It completely engulfed my room. I could hear and feel the thunder and rain from beyond the wall behind my speakers to about two feet to the sides of my shoulders. Keep in mind my speakers about 9 feet in front of me and laid back sounding.

Did it have this effect in your room Mike? Any other parts of the CD that are on this level that maybe I missed? The whole CD is great, but this is by far the best example of it. Also, did you realize that in the begining of The Pot, the vocals have a reverse echo? I first noticed it on my iPod, and couldn't hear it in my room until last night

My next speakers are going to be more forward, which probably will bring the storm even closer and parts of it behind me - not that this track will be my sole auditioning piece or the make or break piece in the decision.

The only downfall to this CD is the recording and production of the vocals. They aren't recorded as clean/clear as I'd like, and they're pushed too far back for my liking. Then again, in concert the singer stays at the back of the stage more than anything else. He's usually where the drums traditionally are. Maybe they're trying to re-create this during production? I know the release date was pushed back a couple of times because they weren't completely happy with the production.

I'd love to hear this track in a properly treated room with speakers that cast a huge image everywhere - maybe some Totem Arros?

Ok, even though I am no longer buying albums I did pick up;

"Walk On The Wild Side - The Best of Lou Reed" (spinning on the TT as I type this)

A replacement Boston for the one that Nuck smuggled out of Dallas, just not a 1/2 speed master vinyl like the one I had. :-(

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside - German Vinyl Pressing

Sem,

The back cover as this printed on it;

"Much thanks and love to Dave Gilmore for "rolling the ball" in the beginning, the K. T. Bush Band for giving it a kick, EMI for "the strange phenomena", my teachers of music + movement for being "heavy" and to all of you with open ears - please feel it."

Led Zeppelin - Boxed Set of 6 LPs (with the cornfield cover) Atlantic 7 82144-1 Vinyl

LPs 1 and 2 tonight.

I have to agree with Frank regarding Zeppelin and also from what I saw of the "100 Greatest..." I posted on the "Your Reference Library" thread. This is truly reference material, I am just to worn out tonight to post an informative message there. "Dazed and Confused" presented some of the deepest powerful bass I have heard on my system.

Between this and Tool's "10,000 Days" its a good thing my neighbors are not too close to me.

Probably part of the reason I am so worn out.

I hope not...that's a bit cheesy in my opinion. I'm simply shopping for great sound on a budget. I came to the conclusion that I don't have the scratch you playa's have but I enjoy switching out gear and experiencing different sounds. I've found a way to do it on a budget I can afford while still getting great sound. It's been a lot of fun and I've made some great friends.

Art, as you're gathering all this gear are you also getting rid of stuff at the same rate? If not I would imaging it might be getting harder to move around in your home.

You recently tossed...for shame. The 317 was not one of their best anyway. The sealed version was far better than the ported one.

No, I haven't sold or traded any of the gear yet. I plan to put together 4 total setups (plus my wifes), 3 of them vintage which inevitably will include a modet vintage Mac system. We pesently have 7 pairs of speakers, 7 receivers and 1 integrated, 5 digital sources and 7 turntables. Not all of which works however much of it does and quite well I might add. Much fun is being had. Remember, most of my life, until the last few years, I have been poor. Just having a few free nickels to play with is still novel to me.

Thanks for the well wishes for Sherilyn...still no doing so well. Hope you loved one has recovered.

back to my Pink Floyd CDR from above.

I had a friend in Chicago. I met him at an audio store a little over a year ago in Chicago at Gill's Custom House during their close the doors sale. His name was Rich Potts. He knew more about vinyl, labels, rarities, productions, etc than all of us on this forum combined now about hi-fi and electronics. We struck up a rapport. He sold me a number of HQ recordings and gave me a few outstanding CDRs. He is the one who told me to look out for the Pink Floyd Umma Gumma LP with the Gigi Cover still on it. I actually found one and bought it. The Boston Master LP I gave Nuck was one I bought from Rich.

We would talk for 45 mins to an hour and a half, I would listen to his compliants about his girlfriend etc, then he would get into some heavy stuff about vinyl.

He died suddenly of a heart attack, literally while I was driving up from Dallas to Chicago. Part of the trip was to hook up with him, swap some LPs with him, give some vintage LPs to John Gill, the gentlemean who's shop I met Rich in, and to go off and sell / trade at a local dealer.

The Floyd CDR was from him and contained Animals from a UK Master he possessed, Echoes off Music Fidelity Sound Labs Meddle (this guy had some good sh!t, he missed his calling), Live Astonomy Domine (1991), Frost DYOL (RARE).

The CDR stops abruptly, appropo.

Cheers to Rich Potts.

My condolences Mike. I was going to say what Stryvn said.

Aenima is my favorite Tool CD. I haven't really listened to it yet on the Bryston. Its a great sounding CD in the right system, and horrible in the wrong one. When I originally demoed the Nait 5i/CD5 combo, it was the first CD I used. I also listened to it on a Nait 5i/CD5x/Ariva combo, and haven't been the same since. If I had the money, I would have bought that system on the spot just for what it did with the Aenima CD.

Then there was my NAD 320BEE/523 CD changer/PSB Image T55 system that completely butchered it.

My main and really only complaint about the current system is the bass speed. Maybe a little veiling too, but not too much. Tool's bass speed muddies it up a little too much. I know first hand that its not the Apollo nor the B60. Its the PSBs. Granted they're great for the money, they're really outclassed in my system when it comest to bass speed and overall clarity.

The BB King CD is phenominal. Lucille really shines, as you put it. I can almost see BB singing and playing Lucille right in front of me. The SQ of the rest of the stuff kind of pales in comparison. Maybe its my speakers, I don't know. I'd love to hear it on vinyl.

Art- I also have been playing many of ones you post, or something by the artist if I don't have the same one. I like it when someone lists something I am not familiar with. That happens plenty. I will never catch up, especially with all those old LPs to rediscover. No time to comment on all the above posts but I am enjoying everyones input! Keep it up guys.

just bought the new Sophie Milman CD, "Make Someone Happy".

It is everything that I have come to love from her, and even more. This album is more fluid than her first, with the piano playing a larger role than it did in "sophie milman".

Her voice is positively sultry, posessing a smooth sounding low alto.

if you have her first album, or are curious, this is one great album.

Loved the previous Sophie CD, Gavin, will be ordering her latest for sure.

Okay, music for the past couple of days:

Neil Young's Original Master mixes "Greatest Hits" on CD.

ON VINYL

Men At Work "Business as Usual"
Men At Work "Business as Usual"
Men At Work "Business as Usual"
Ryan Adams "Heartbreaker"

MiKe W and Nuck will get that!

Also on VINYL

Dire Straits "Love Over Gold"
Rolling Stones "Emotional Rescue"
Van Morrison "Moondance"
Bob Marley "Kaya"
David Bowie "Heroes"
Supertramp "Crisis What Crisis"
Santana "Caravanserai"

The above bought from a second store

And retrieved from my parents when I left them almost 30yrs ago, but unlistened:

Grover Washington's "Mister Magic"
The Essential Beatles
Clockwork Orange Soundtrack
MFSB "Love Is The Message" which I cannot recall.

All the used albums I purchased are very dirty. I'll be heading to the phono section for help guys.

Okay, okay, that's right - I said VINYL!

Darren Rahn "Once in a Lifetime"

Vanessa Carlton "Heroes and Thieves"

There are certain times that I can't get enough of Vanessa Carlton, and other times I find her voice annoying. Having followed her since her first album, I can say she is the real deal. She is one of a kind in the pop schlock that is aimed for a younger audience (myself included in that statement). Her voice is honest and pure, and all the piano performances on her albums is from her.

Seeing her live, performing her songs on a piano and singing, without the help of an accompanying band really made me realize how different she is. The performance was flawless, without a single flaw. I have seen many concerts where the performer was seemingly out of tune, but not Vanessa.

Today

Deborah Cox - Destination Moon - very nice (cd)
Bob Marley's Kaya and the Stones' Emotional Rescue sounding real good on vinyl.
