Hello,

I recently bought an Onkyo TX-SR071 Receiver and being an amateur at all this, am kind of confused by all the discussions about getting the right matching speakers for my receiver.

Would really appreciate if anyone could help me answer these questions -

About the Receiver-

The manual says in the Amplifier Section:

Average Power Output (FTC)
All Channels: 100W per channel min. RMS at 8ohms
Damping Factor: 60 AT 8Ohms
Continous Power Output (DIN) 130W at 6ohms
Maximum Power Output (EIAJ): 160W at 6ohms

Questions:

1. Could someone please explain this jargon

2. What Impedence? (8ohms)?, What wattage?
3. What is this decibel stuff?
4. I read somewhere that a Speaker/Receiver mismatch could damage either of them. When could this happen?
5. Any other thing that I should be concerned with while choosing the speakers?

3. For a budget of $1500 for the speakers, could someone please recommend me some decent speakers.
(Am looking for some Floor-standing speakers). Heard about Definitive, Infinity, Polk and Pinnacle. Anyone better than the other?

Thanks in advance,
Viren

I can help with some of it. For the impedance, it is talking about driving speakers which are rated at 8 ohms which are most of them. Don't buy speakers rated at less. There isn't too much else to worry about.

As for speakers, the Athenas are good and I would also have you look at an on-line speaker the Ascends which are supposed to be very nice and have won lots of awards. Go to

Good luck.
