John Lennon Collection - QUIEX II on the Linn

Wrapping up about 7 hours of listening. Took Jan's advice and moved my 2 channel system off of the wall with my HT system. Now the 2 channel system is facing the length of the room instead of the width.

Speakers are between 7' to 8' off the back wall, 4' off the side walls, 8' from me. Room is 23' by 16'6".

If you read "Wrapping up 7 hours of listening", then read "Took Jan's advice..." you can more or less sort out that I believe that Jan is very knowledgeable and an outstanding resource.

In between watching the NFL draft and puttering around the house this weekend I listened to 4 legends and one little-known (but shouldn't be) songwriter.

Paul Simon - Graceland
Bob Welch - His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond
Al Green - I'm Still in Love With You
Chris Orbach - Safely Through the Night
Burton Cummings - Up Close and Alone

I got back from another band concert I was in today.

That's what I WAS listening to. I plan to get the CD.

Overview: I went, watched the 6th grade, picked up a tuba I haven't played in like a year and not used to. I then went up with the 7th grade and played the music for the first time AT THE CONCERT. That was a hoot since every 7th grader was like HUH????? I then went up with my grade and went crazy with dynamics and all that. I watched the high school and liked the dynamics. I couldn't feel it. Then I watched the jazz band play "Brick House, Ricky Don't Lose that Number" among others. I then watched the high shcool art teacher play guitar really fast and he's voted the #1 guitarist around here and all the other band directors etc. supported the band with their own solos. Then there was a drum set quintet (5 D-sets). I could almost feel it but not quite with them all kicking the bass drum. It was pretty cool, I tell ya. I then watched the Winter Drumline go crazy with "Christmas Train." I could definitely feel the power of all 10 bass drums slamming away along with the timpani and all the other percussive instruments. I hope I can get a CD, 'cuz they recorded it. I then went to my high school friend and we joked around (I mean literally fell over laughing and going all goofy). Thanks for listening.

Sorry for grammatical errors I might've made. My sister is pushing for the computer. She only gave me 5 minutes to type it.

Richard Strauss' Don Quixote.
George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra on Sony Heritage Masterworks.

This is probably the best recorded cd I own.
Recorded in 1959, but the sound is so real, even better than most Mercury Living Presence recordings I have on cd.

My cheap cd player seems to really like this recording and morphs out of sheer joy into a SACD player.
My humble Japanese amp transforms into a high-end McIntosh pre-amp power amp combi...could it possibly sound any better than this?

Enough about the sound, it's the music especially, IMO the best work Strauss has written (his "4 letzter Lieder" comes close).
Szell's reading is faultless to my ears, just the right balance between a fair amount of orchestral polish, tonal beauty and rhythmic, flexible playing.

Good post Nout..indeed that is a good recording. A reminder about one of America's all time greatest orchestra's. I have another of Szell and the Cleveland's Strauss recordings on Sony.

I must admit though that for me the Vier letzte Lieder especially the Szell/Schwartzkopf and Janowski/Isokoski recordings transcend all other Strauss.

You jazz fans really need to check Sophie Millman out. She is an up and coming artist in the jazz community, and hopefully is here to stay. Her voice is sweet and smooth, but sounds older than her years. I believe she is 23 if I recall correctly.

Here is her website. You guys really should check it out. I am in love with her voice. Not what I would classify as "unique" per-say, but just fabulous.

Out of the way find;

Sitting in a deli parking lot in Joplin Missouri I look across to street to see an obscured storefront sign except for the word "Music". Off I went to see what they may have.

Well I bought one CD which I had wanted to pick up, the new Rush CD "Snakes and Arrows" (loudly blaring away at me via the Saturn as I type this). Sitting next to it on the shelf was Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath" so I grabbed it too.

Then I asked "Do you have any vinyl?" which was met with a raised eyebrow and after a pause I was pointed to an area where there may be "some".

There was, ALL NEW, and I bought just about all of it;

Paul Simon's "Hearts and Bones" Quiex II Limited Edition Pressing - $8.99

The Shins "Wincing the Night Away" - $12.08

Death Cab For Cutie "Plans" Premium Vinyl Pressing HQ - 180 - $19.25

Ben Folds "Songs For Silverman" 180 - Gram Double Vinyl - $15.61

Johnny Cash "Original Sun Singles '55 - '58 Sundazed High Quality Vinyl Mono - $22.13

Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" 30th Anniversary Edition Vinyl. Original packaging including stickers and posters heavyweight virgin vinyl plus new 30th anniversary poster, Made in Holland - $20.00 (Yes, still in plastic wrap, unopened.)

You never know what can be behind the door below the sign that says "music"...

stryvn,

not luck, persistence or obsession, take your pick.

As to cash, you will see a wholesaling out of my spare parts. All in all a good deal, about 4 folks should be fairly content with the deals they got, my wife Marsh has the "crap" out of the house, and I have basically exchanged items that she was not going to let me use in the house for something I will thoroughly enjoy. Heck the Saturn looks enough like the Apollo that this purchase may never have to be discussed, especially when I keep handing her the cash from my sales.

Andre, if you like Floyd check out groups like
King Crimson
Alan Parsons Project
Camel
some of Porcupine Tree
Yes
Gentle Giant
Mike Oldfield
While none sound exactly like Floyd, many people who like the Floyd also like the groups above.

McCartney& Wings / Beatles
try Badfinger
some of ELO
Oasis
Tears for Fears
Tons of bands were influenced by Lennon/McCartney.

Quite happy with Amy Winehouse's latest album 'Back to Black'. Stunning voice, interesting lyrics, great band. Shameful recording quality, rather short at 35 minutes. Amazing talent headed for railroad disaster methinks.

Norah Jones' new album Not Too Late is beautifully recorded and very enjoyable too.

Got Cortes by Cortes. Hmm. Not sure about this one.

Andre, have a listen to 'On an island' by David Gilmour.

Regards,
Frank.

Not surprised. Some (most?) of the recordings of those days from the likes of Sundazed had a life and vitality which is so far beyond the processed over-produced 'pearls' we get nowadays...
