If you have an old pc power supply lying around (with a switch on it, not the newer ones that rely on the motherboard to be the switch), you can use it to power a car stereo. I recommend 400 watts (the wattage tells you the limit, it can go that high, but it will only put out what the car stereo demands, which is rarely that much. You can easily pass with a 250 watt power supply).

Just add some speakers, and you got yourself a real "mini" system.

You can also build a nice box or something to keep it all together.

I have a backpack with a cheap pioneer car stereo, puts out 200 watts, powered by a 7 amp/hour rechargeable battery (used for those electric scooters, small, and not too heavy to put in a backpack, can buy online for $20-$30). Have 2 100watt speakers mounted on my backpack, sounds great when riding my bicycle with friends, or just to show off at school. Also makes for great sidewalk parties on the go!
