THD Explanation for dummies, please

I found the definition on expedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_harmonic_distortion#Explanation but I would like to understand it in pure basic English (THD for Dummies) How this affects the sound or does it? The THD on some tubes is less than 1% whilst others are rated at =< 2%. I want to pull the plug on a tube integrated but before I do I would like to understand this concept.
