Hello, I just bought a SDAT 400W 3-way speaker (LEB404) from overstock.com. I want to use it from my laptop and I have only the headphone audio output. What is the cheapest (with modest quality) way to interface my laptop to the speakers? Thanks for all responses.

You could use an inexpensive stereo receiver such as:

Or, you could pay a little more and get a home theater receiver such as:

I would use dedicated computer speakers for your application though.

With the right wires you could also get an amp, but I'd have to look further into that.

Something like the Sonic T-amp would work, although it would have limited power. The price is definitely right though.

Steve, I thought the same thing right away, but those speaks are quite low eff.

There are lots of other varients on the chip amp, but the bigger ones are more money.

But hold tight, super-varients are coming up really soon.

LR, what sound devices do you have on the laptop?

What type of files are you going to run.
If you tell me mp3, I will leave you to your own devices.

I have the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio from Analog Devices. Yes, most of my songs are in MP3 format. Nuck, what format do you suggest? Aren't most songs you download in MP3?

Never, ever.
LR, you really should load a few lossless files. They are big, but that is why we have outboard drives.

WMA is ok to start.
