is it safe to plug my reciever, dvd/cd player and tv all into the same surge protector? is there anything I shouldn't have plugged into it? Is a stereo-equipment specific protector neccessary? Thanks.

You should be fine. The only reason to use a stereo-grade suppressor is if you want to filter hum and lightning from a satalite antenna or CableTV. I would, however, recommend some type of suppressor on your equipment.
