Wonder how it would compare to a T-amp running a pair of $50 Insignia bookshelf speakers and a $60 Toshiba 3990 DVD player...

What makes it somewhat decent?

Based on his many reviews, it appears he is the expert on just about every component he's never personally owned.

Nuck: the speakers at least have decent cabinets, and the class-D amp does have superior clarity. The problem is the ribbon tweeters in the speakers, which can be a bit fatiguing.

Rush: yes, I sure am! Heh heh! And I don't give pompous, one-note advice on room treatments to every single question under the sun either, unlike some people. (cough cough)

maybe...but the BB listing seems to suggest that it's a passive subwoofer, which would be a scary proposition.

I also wonder if it has any bass management when a sub is added or if the mains are still run full-range.

yeah, the spring clips are a bummer indeed.

Personally I'd much rather pay less for the sub-less version, and shell out $150 for an Athena p4000 or $100 for a Dayton 10".
