Mini Plug to Left and Right (?)

I have a passive subwoofer on my Sony System and I would like to replace it with an active subwoofer that uses a 1/8" Mini Plug ... Can it cut the Mini Plug cable open and connect it to the subwoofer speaker cable connecttion (2 wire clamps)
