How about you help us, James. What switch did you flip on the old turntable that provided better sound?

I have a Sony with a switch designed for receivers that do not have a Phono input. However when I flip this switch, I do get sound, but not much. My new Yamaha receiver sounds great with CD, DVD, etc, but not with this turntable. My very old Sansui sounds outstanding with a turntable compared to the new Yamaha. I've been told I need a preamp, any suggestions?

.

Does the owner's manual suggest what this switch does?

Yes, I actually had the switch in the wrong position. It now works great! I think this switch turns on an internal preamp, it talks about turning it on if the receiver does not have a "phono" input.
