Hello everyone. I am looking for a new "universal player, which will allow me to play DVDs in my HT, but also which can play SACDs (I have a few). In searching products, I came across this player and I wondered if anyone has any experience with it? Likes and dislikes? Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Hawk,

I have not heard the DVD-87, but I bought a CA Azur 540D about a year and a half ago. It has performed flawlessly. It does not do SACD though, only DVD-A. I use it in my HT for DVD video only. I never had an interest in hi-res multi-channel music. I can attest to the build quality and reliability of Cambridge Audio.

Hawk,

I have no argument with what Rick says, however, I believe if very good quality SACD playback (either in surround or stereo) is important in your decision, then I think there is a need to spend quite a bit more this what this unit costs. Not unless things have drastically changed in universal players. Of course I haven't heard this player and I'm only giving my two cents worth.

I have a Denon 1920 (I think that's the model #) that cost around $350 and it plays everything. I'm very pleased with it. Not sure what price range you are looking at but that's my $.02.

Hawk: I've just ordered a CA DVD-87, after much research and a lot of comments from others I determined that it will be a good unit. Now I know that it is a "cheap" player - but I'm not convinced that you'll get much better performance than this for under $1,500 USD. Your choice - but my money says it will be "good enough" for me! Tune in the Old Dogs thread on Home Audio for my ramblings after the 87 gets here - next week.
