Hi. I am new to the forum but have been reading few posts, off and on.

I'm a student, not too rich, passionate about classic rock. I've around $ 500.00 bucks to spend on speakers. I would prefer something which has a built in amp in it. What would you recommend in the price range? or should I start looking for second hand stuff? Please help.

Athena, Fluance.

Those two are priced very well and sound very good with the right receiver.

What receiver to you have to use?

Sam - I listen to a lot of classic rock and own PSB Image T55 speakers. If you don't mind a "slight cosmetic blemish" the T45's from DMC-Electronics could be the way to go. The T55's have a little better bass than the T45's. The T45's are a great speaker in my opinion.

Scroll about half way down the page to find them. If you have a PSB dealer near you, you could listen to them there. You should try to go to as many hi-fi shops (not places like Best Buy and Circuit City) and listen to as many speakers as you can. The internet-direct speakers (such as the ones mentioned above) can be an alternative. Make sure you are ok with their return policy before ordering.

Stof, a businessman must promote, and the posts here have been generally very good.
I grant Tim his posts in the interest of music lovers everywhere, and a North American entrepreneur.
If other makers paid as much attention, they might find out directly the response from customers.
Not a kick at your observation, just ok to Tim for helping in a lot of ways other than pushing his product.

Stof,

I'm with Nuck on this one. Tim's posts almost always inform and many of them have nothing to do with his speakers. (See his posts on the Amp, Receiver, pre/pro and CD forums.)

Generally, when he does post, he discloses his relationship and his interest in his speakers, although if someone has been around the site for any time he or she already knows that.

Lastly, they're dang good speakers and at their price point, they deserve consideration with every other speaker pushed on this site, e.g., Ed, and me on occasion, suggesting Ascends, T-Man and his speaker choice of the month (depending on what he bought this week - I need to find his wife's sister LOL), db and his Maggies - even tho he doesn't own them, yet.

I agree with all your point, I like Tim's postings and though I haven't heard his speakers, I will acquiesce to the testemonies of all here who did, but imagin the mayham if all the vendors came in here and pushed their products.

But not all vendors will. you understand.
The little guy with the big product WILL.
Think Little guy makes happy faces.
I back that, along with the support.

I understand your point as well Stof.
In my own defense I avoid suggesting my speakers if I feel that they are not the best choice for the person asking the question or if the poster has listed a requirement that my products do not meet. In this case Sam asked for speakers in a specific price range. My honest opinion is that the two speakers I listed are as good or better than any for the same price. If Sam feels they do not meet his requirements then this will be the last posting I make on this thread.

Dont worry about it Tim a little promotion doesent hurt, besides you have paid your dues on this forum and this is your hometown and you continue to be helpful whenever someone needs it,and you have a great product to back it,so no gripes here and you know its more than a few of us that back your speakers to.

Sam, Speakers with amps built in are a rarity, not the norm.

Good low price alternatives are stereo receivers by Harmon-Kardon and Onkyo. Check out www.athenaspeakers.com and purchase them at www.audioadvisor.com.

By the way Sam www.audioadvisor.com does not list the Athena AS-F1 on their site but they do carry them and I think they are $178 each. You can call them. In my opinion the AS-F1 floorstander or the AS-B2 bookshelf speakers with a Harmon-Kardon or Onkyo stereo receiver with 50 watts per channel or more would be a good starter set up. Oh, and the Athenas LOVE TO ROCK! I have both the AS-F2s and AS-F1s.
