Violins vs. violas

Is there really a difference in sound, or have we actually been the victim of a cruel hoax?
And what's with these outrageous prices for Stradivarii, when you can get a perfectly good violin at Sam's for $64.95, with case and a bow thrown in?
Now the double bass is a different matter, of course, although I can't for the life of me understand why orchestras need both the double bass and cellos.
After all, they all sound the same.

Is this kind of like Affirmed vs. Alydar?

I think not because the human interpretation of sound just isn't as readily quantifiable.

Opinions make the horse race which is great; we actually wind up with an undeniable defining moment.

Too bad, ain't so with the crazy hobby of sound, audio and opinions. And so it goes:

Will Sam's cut a deal if I only want the case to put my Stradivarius in?

Surprise. Opinions vary on that inimitable sound of your Stradivari.

Based on your Stradivari (I own the other 599), how did the sound, precisely, compare to Mr. Walton's axe?
