Blown Speakers

I'm pretty sure my room mate blew my speakers last weekend while I was out of town. I have a set of JBL E-80's running through a 70's era Pioneer receiver. I usually have a CD/DVD player as my source, but when I came back it looked as though he was using a computer or mp3 player.

Now when I try to play any music from the CD/DVD player the sound is very distorted at first, then the distortion goes away, and then so does the sound! I'm assuming this is the end of these speakers, is there any way to repair them!?!

That doesn't sound like a typical speaker problem. Have you hooked the speakers to another amp to check their operation? Do you have any other speakers you can hook to your amplifier to check the speakers' operation with your amplifier?

Unfortunately, I have neither a different amp or different set of speakers at my immdeiate disposal, but it would be possible to get a hold of some eventually. If you can think of anything else in the mean time, don't hesitate to post it!
