WHAT SPEAKERS TO BUY

Any suggestions on what speakers to buy for a SONY STRDE897 receiver. A friend recommends polk audio. I read that Energy is also good. Any suggestions?

They're both good speaker manufacturers, as are many others out there (Paradigm, Ascend, PSB to name a few). The right answer is what sounds best to you and fits your budget. No matter what you buy, you'll be limited by that Sony receiver. You should have come looking for advice before buying it.

I have Polk Monitor 70's as main speakers and love them. Im not familiar with the Sony. I have them hooked up to Pioneer and for the money am very happy with them.

bongot,

As long as you are set on keeping the Sony, I would not spend a whole lot of money on the speakers because they will never perform to their full potential. A good sub on the other hand is fairly independent so I would not scrimp on that.

Here's what I'd get in your shoes:

Athena AS-B1s, 2 pairs for $200
Athena AS-C1 center channel, $100
from audioadvisor.com

Hsu STF-2 subwoofer,
$425 shipped
or $350 shipped B-stock
from hsuresearch.com

if you're using a sony reciever... i'd suggest avoiding any speakers described as polite in the treble. to my ears, sony recievers sound too polite themselves and could stand some brightening.

if you don't mind doing some homework, i'll paste this list of speaker brands known for "bang for the buck" along with a few reviews of different models in different sizes for you to ponder. it isn't a definative answer, but there are alot of great speakers out here for reasonable prices from these manufacturers. canadian speakers in particular seem to offer alot of bang for the buck.

value speaker brands:
canadian:
............................................
axiom
paradigm
psb
energy
mirage
............................................
aperion
NHT
epos
wharfdale
infinity
polk
boston acoustics
cambridge sound works
ascend
definative technology
pinnacle

specific models & reviews:
Axiom Audio Millennia M40Ti $275 floorstander

Paradigm Esprit v.3 $400 floor stander RAVE

Wharfdale Diamond 9.6 $800 tower gets a rave

Stereophile magazine really liked the $320 Epos ELS-3 minimonitors and rated them "class-c" over speakers 3 times their price.

the last speaker i mentioned was magnepan MMGs, but i wouldn't trust them on a sony as they're 4 ohm loads and most japanese don't like 4 ohms.

I will suggest Infinity Beta 50s. They typically run about $500 a piece and they really sound like they should run $1000 a piece. You can get a pair for $730 or so on ebay after shipping so go to your local store and check them out.

They are a very natural sounding speaker. They have deep lows but not overpowering lows without cranking the bass up.

Polk's are too bright for my liking.
